Welcome to FixYa! This is a common problem with the Presario and is easily solved. Go to this link and enter your exact model number:http://www.hp.com/#Support. After you do that you will be asked your operating system, XP then a list of drivers will be provided. You need to download the chipset drivers, the audio drivers and any other drivers applicable to your hardware.   There is also a hardware auto-detect feature there where your computer will be automatically detected and the same list of drivers provided with an option to install directly or just download if you are not using the same computer for which you need drivers.  A folder called "hp" will be created on your C drive. Go to Control Panel>System>Device Manager and you will see a yellow exclamation mark, !, next to all of the devices that need drivers. Click on those devices, go to Update Driver and point the browse window to that "hp" folder and the drivers will be loaded.  Burn these drivers to disk so that if you reinstall in the future you are good to go. Let me know if you have any questions and I will help. Steve Medley

Do you have the CD utility of your Compaq Presario? if you have it, insert it into a CDrom install the audio driver. your CD utility labeled as the name of your motherboard, if your audio is built in thats it your needed. but if its not, the CD labeled what ever the name of the sound-card is, which inserted unto your motherboard. just install the audio driver of that sound card and it will on.

Just bought a couple of HP 8100 Elite desktops. How can I downgrade them to Windows XP pro ?

You would have to buy yourself a copy of XP pro and do an OS reinstall. The XP pro should come with a COF key. When you do that you will need to install all the drivers for your computer. Check at the manufacturers website and download all the drivers for your PC that work with windows XP. Do this first then do the OS install.

No sound on my windows XP machine. Problem started after reinstalled my XP operating system

Hello there:
The problem that is the most common is the sound not working due to reinstalling xp what happnes is the original operating system has the original sound drivers on it so the new copy of xp would not have them
So what you will need to to get the computer on line and go to www.ac vinal ac 97. and download this audio driver this wiorks wonders on systems that has had the system redone and if the original drivers are missing it also includes a really neat eq and other sound goodies that are pretty handy ok?
Hope this is very helpful for you
Best regards Michael

My windows media center 2005, can't install media?

if you have the OS installed then that tells me you need the sound card drivers. Go to this page:

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&cs=2684&l=en&s=pub&ServiceTag=&SystemID=DIM_PNT_P4_8400&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=

Choose your operating system, then go underneath where it says audio and choose the one that says driver.

Download it and then install it and you should have sound then.

Optiplex GX520 with vista

There should be no problem, if the sound doesn’t work try uninstalling the the Drivers and Reinstalling after you installed Vista im pretty sure that Vista will install the Drivers automatically.

I have no sound

Sound like you may need to download drivers. Take a look at your device manager and look for anything with an exclamation point these are problems.

CANT BOOT FOR REINSTALLATION OF XP, IT SEZ "NTLDR" IS MISSING, ALSO MENTIONS SOMETHING ABOUT THE HARD DRIVE NOT WORKING

If you have the OS disks try a repair first. Run the OS disk and choose the repair option rather than reformatting. That usually fixes ntldr issues.
