Question about HP mx705 17" CRT Monitor

HP mx705 17 in.CRT Conventional Monitor vertical goes bad

I have an HP mx705 17" CRT monitor that works fine for about 5 to 10 minutes. Then, the vertical sweep goes black for a split second to about halfway up the screen. Within 2 to 3 minutes, half the screen goes black. About 2" from the top, and 7 inches from the bottom leaving me with a crunched picture about 6" tall. It stays this way, even after I turn the monitor off for a few minutes. If I shut down and re-start the computer afterwards, it temporarily fixes itself. Any suggestions? HP was not interested in my problem.

    I switched monitors with an older computer.

    It does the same thing on the other system.

It seems that youre monitor has a dry solder problem, try tapping it if the picture resumes to normal for a while than get it resoldered from a technician. if it soesnot solve problem than look out for a burnt resistance.

While it is sounding like a hardware problem. I'll throw in my 2 cents. Have you check the cables from the power to the source and from the monitor to the computer. Just make sure those aren't loose. One other thing...you mentioned you turn off the computer "afterwards" then it fixes itself. Is the fix for longer than it turns on at first? or does it stay on longer then goes out? Black screen


The problem could be in the Monitor, Computer or Cable. Did you try to connect another monitor or can you try to connect another computer (maybe a laptop) to that monitor?
It's important to understand where to start.

The Horizontal power supply voltage is low. This is provided as a "sawtooth" waveform via the CRT flyback transformer.

Some flybacks offer a voltage adjustment via a potentiometer ("pot") on the side of the unit. I do not have a schematic for your monitor, so I cannot tell you for certain if this is an option. This adjustment should only be made by a trained technician. If you are not familiar with high voltage electronics, DO NOT OPEN THE SET!

I recommend replacing the monitor. When they age, you can only buy some time before it goes for good, and prices are so low now that repairs are not usually cost effective.

Only Horizontal line in monitor


It looks like the vertical sync controller chip is faulty. Get it repair by certified technician.

try to replace all capacitor in vertical section a leak capacitor can make your screen to shrink....
