Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have an old p4 system and a stack of p4 processors lying around, my question is how can I find out what the fastest speed processor my mobo can handle is without the manual. I've started dxdiag from the cmd menu and my system model is listed as 679222g and manufacturer as IBM. It was originally in a netvista desktop pc but can't really remember much more than that. At the mo it's running a p4 1.8g but I have a few p4's of diff speeds but no idea if my board will run them. Please if anybody knows anything about this board, throw me a lifeline, I'm drowning here. Thx much

Why don't you just try them. If they will post and load a OS then they are ok for that board.

As near as I can determine, the fastest CPU supported is 2.2 Ghz. for more clarification and information regarding this model, start here: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-42590

I have an old IBM Netvista 6794 pc with its original IBM motherboard that it came with P4 pc with a 2.0ghz cpu. Now I want to change the processor. My question is can a 3.6ghz or 3.4ghz p4 intel cpu work...

Unlikely, I would think that the best processor you could use would be a 3.0Ghz or maybe a 3.06Ghz. If you look at the motherboard part number you will be able to find out from the manufacturers what the fastest CPU is. A lot depends on the FSB on the mobo and the Bios version. You need a "Socket 478" processor I think you will find that the processors you are looking at are "Socket 775" ( this is the fitting socket for the processor) .

Processor upgrade

You have a P4 Processor.... a 3.0 was the fastest. I would not upgrade the processor. You can however upgrade the Motherboard if you can do it yourself. That will take you to a SATA Hard Drive system and allow you to afford some faster RAM and Cheeper RAM.

Another option: get 1 gig of ram, new Hard Drive and Win7. Speed improvement will be double.

GD8 motherboard

The GD8 mobo spec says that the bopard is only compatible with P4 and Celeron D processors so no you cant swap it! Generally the Athlon 1800+ is a better processor but it depends on the mobo, BIOS, RAM setup etc.

P4 Pentium

The GA-8IE comes with the 845E chipset. The below link will provide a list of all the processors the board will support.

http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Support/Motherboard/CPUSupport_Model.aspx?ProductID=1320

It appears that the fastest it will support is the P4 Prescott, Northwood, or Extreme @ 3.4GHz (800MHz FSB).

Hope this is the information you were looking for.

Fastest CPU available for the K7N2G?

Look for socket A processors and ignore the XXXX+ and focus on the XXXXMHz rating (the MoBo's manufacturer's support site will give you the max processor your Board will handle). Since you mention that your MoBo is 4 to 5 years old, you'll probably better serve yourself to replace the MoBo and processor (you'll be able to upgrade to a much better/faster processor by upgrading both, and shouldn't cost that much more), and probably be happier with the result. You may want/need to upgrade your Power supply while you are at it too.
