We have had our carpet cleaner for about 2 years and this is the first problem. The diverter flap had broken away from the diverter knob and settings would not change, water would not divert from tools to floor. I took the unit apart and found this problem and ordered the knob and flap. Welll, now I can't figure out how to put it back together. I was trying to avoid taking it somewhere--can anyone help? I feel like if I know how the parts work and fit together, the rest would be a breeze. Thanks for any help.

Had to take it in to the shop. I finally figured out the knob assembly, but another piece fell out and I couldn't figure out where it came from. And, I never could get the top cover to go back down all the way. Thanks for the help anyway. Only 34.95 to put humpty dumpty back together again.

I actually had to purchase a brand new cleaner because the pump had actually melted the part that turns the carpet brush. Repairman said that Bissell beings him the most business from repairs and that this pump thing melting is very common with this model. Newer models he said replaced plastic with metal to prevent this. I ended up with a Hoover Steamvac, which in my opinion outcleans the Bissel anyway. The diverter mechanism on the other one is VERY complicated, too much to describe with words. Only thing i can say is put it together with the top of the unit OFF and then replace the top...somehow without clamping one of the tubes. Say a prayer before you do it so you won't have a stroke. (ha ha) Thanks everyone.

all good - 34.95 and a better knowledge of the inside has to be better than getting a new one and sticking the old one in a landfill. Thanks for posting the feedback - if you managed to see how then please post a little description of how the problem was solved in case it could help someone else.
Happy steam sucking
