If you are using XP you may have a problem with your default input language.

Control Panel > Regional & language options
Click languages tab and then Details.

Try doing the same thing on a correctly working PC and see if there is any difference.

Possibly, although new, it is simply defective. You can try reinstalling the driver. But here is a "tester": http://www.keyboardtester.com/

I'm working on a Dell Inspiron 1300 laptop with Word 2003. When I type " I get @ appearing and vice versa - they have exchanged with each other. What have I done?

Did somebody remove the "key-caps" and switch them, as a "prank" ?
The order of letters on the keyboard is: EXCLAMATION, AT, OCTOTHORPE, DOLLAR, PERCENT.

Or, check the "keyboard input language". Windows allows for different keyboards, such as Norwegian and German, that have different keys in different places on the keyboard.
Switch to "US English".

The wrong symbols appear when key pressed. i.e " appears when @ is pressed and vice versa

sounds like you have the keyboard set to the wrong country. Go into control panel, then into regional settings and set the language and keyboard for the area in which you live ( like english US or english australian) then reboot to load the correct codepage... Have fun.

System is asking to enter product key when i entered it it is responding as invalid product key and cautioning that it should be activated in 20 days if not it is going to stop working .even i buyed this...

The product key should be supplied by the distributor. Be caustious that any alphabetical characters are not zero and one in numeral form. and vice versa. It is poor management to use these characters as they often appear alpha when they are numeric. Try subsituting these characters first.

This is a problem I had at onre time and it turned out that I had selected the USA Keyboard in stead of tthe UK Keyboard, you could have the same error or vice versa (ie Uk instaed of USA) so go to START then select CONTROL PANEL then select KEYBOARD and check which is selected and correct if necessary.
