The battery goes dead in the cold on my 2004 dodge ram 2500

The truck sits over night in the cold and the battery voltage drops just low enough for it not to turn over. The charging systen on the voltage gauge always seems to be about 3/4 all the way to the right, always charging.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially and not knowing if the battery is new, possibilities are:

  • one or more cells of the battery is weak, would therefore require replacement (most likely);
  • one or more of the diodes in the alternator has an electrical leak, and therefore would require check, repair or replacement (just a possibility).
Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.

1999 Dodge Ram 2500 Turbo Diesel battery gauge has been low for a couple days, tried to start it this morning and it was dead. I jump started it aand it ran for a few minutes after unhooking jumper cables,...

yes to a point. Obviously as you know if your alternator is dead your battery will drain and the car will die. But also, if the battery has quit so bad and maintains a voltage of no more than 8-1/2 volts or so the car will still die because there isn't enough voltage to maintain the computer and it will shut down.

I have an 2003 dodge ram 2500 cummins diesel and have trouble starting when its been sitting, but when it has been sitting for a bit it would start with no problem. Have no error codes and when it is...

Are the batteries in good shape? Starter slower than before? I hope one of those two. Alternative would be glow plugs. In nice weather it probably starts like a champ but when the temperature drops the glow plugs work overtime to get that initial bang to start. I'm a dodge man but have never driven a Dodge powered by cummins so I don't know about the glow plug light situation. On fords they look like a pigs tail or it just has a "wait to start" amber light. Sometimes a double cycle, letting the light go out and turning it off and then letting it cycle again will make for an easy start.

Possibly one of your circuits is left on. Check especiallye small lights around your car. ie, glove compatiments, on sun shields etc. You may also want to make sure that there is enough water or elecrolyte in your battery.
