I have the WD 1 TB hard drive. It starts to power up and then the lights just turn off. Pull the USB cable and it does it again, but it won't stay on.

I had the same exact problem for a while and I think it's a problem with the slot where the USB cable connects to the HDD. I eventually just took a small knife and pushed in the metal tabs around where the cable connects as they were pushed out from the cable being pulled at random angles before. Somehow it works perfectly now, so I guess it just wasn't detecting a computer or in this case an xbox and automatically powering down to save electricity and heat. Anyway I just thought I'd share my experience, good luck with your HD!

You can normally buy a replacement adapter from Western Digital from this link, but they are out of stock at the moment.

As an alternative place to purchase this, it looks like you can buy it on Amazon.com

My Book, Need upgrade to make it compatible with Mac Leopard OS X. Article #1716.

1) Go to support.wdc.com 2) Click Downloads 3) Select MyBook, then your MyBook model (I selected MyBook Home, as it was appropriate to my hardware) 4) Download and install the WD Drive Manager (Mac)
Note that this software only updates the utilities that control the power button, drive lights, and capacity gauge. If the drive is otherwise not functioning properly, you'll probably need to seek alternate support: the hardware itself functions just fine for me as an external drive without installing any additional software or drivers.

320 wd external hard drive

It could be a faulty power adapter, or the control board inside the caddy is gone.
If you have the warranty booklet contact Western Digital , they should register your product and validate the guaranty.
If not go back to the shop the same if you pay with credit card for example, they can track your purchase.

If you do not get a replacement, well the most expensive part of your device is the Hard disk, and if you are lucky, and dont keep turning it on and off it should still be ok.
In this case buy a replacement caddy enclosure for your hard drive, they start from $10. Buy a good one for $25.
There are two kinds, pata and sata, I think yours is sata, check it out.
