Firewire worked once but not anymore...Canon XHA1

I was able to capture video once with my firewire cable connected to the PC. I tried it again and it give the error that there is no connection to the camera. It shows up in the device manager. I can use the cable with different things and they work.

Its common that this firewire port breaks on the xh-a1, we just shove the butt of the camera against a wall, so as to make the firewire tight and flush inside the port on the cam... finicky but works to capture..

Solution? Maybe, but PC's vary greatly. Pass it on if it works for you. If Win-XP. Device manager. Un-install IEE1394. Close & Restart. Let the system restore the 1394 then try to reconnect the unit, cable to the PC first, then to the powered down camera. Power up the cam. What are you using to ingest? I recommed http://scenalyzer.com.

I have tried to connect my Canon XM2 to my IMac via firewire, but it is not 'seen' by IMovie, FCE or FCP, so I can't capture anything. Thanks

Open the System Profiler on the Mac and establish if the camera is connected to the Mac's firewire BUS. If not, try another cable and also test is the camera's firewire port is working. It's either a cable or socket issue. Some cameras require that the menu of the camera be set to output over firewire, check this as well.

Hello,

as far as I know, you can only save photos on the SD card.
You can capture the video from the tape to your PC via Firewire interface, connect the Firewire cable to the DV connector on your camera and your computer's firewire port and capture it with a program called WinDV.
About the DVD recorder, often it it the case with them that you have to 'finalize' the DVD before it can be read on a PC/Mac

My device is connected. Ulead VideoStudio says: Either no video capture driver is install. Where can I find the driver for Sony handycam DCR-TRV30E

  • The USB connection only allows transfer of pictures and movies stored on the Memory stick. The videos recorded to DV tape is NOT accessible through the USB interface. You must transfer taped videos using i.Link.
  • Go get a Firewire (also known as i.Link and IEEE 1394) cable to connect to your computer's Firewire port. Adding a Firewire PC card is relatively inexpensive, but make sure that card has BOTH the 4 pin and 6 pin connections, for most flexibility.
  • Once you connect the camcorder with the Firewire cable, the Ulead VideoStudio will see the camcorder as a video capture device, without additional software or drivers.

Hi, I am trying to import from my Canon MV 600 ( Tape not digital ) into a mac pro. I got the DV to firewire lead but the computer doesnt seem to recognise the camera. Many thanks Billy

Hi in order to get footage off your camera through Firewire i.e DV you will have to use a software to capture the footage. You can use iMovie to capture the footage off the camera.
Open Apple System Profiler (it's in the Utilities folder) and check to see if your camera appears in the FireWire section.

If your camera is connected via FireWire and is turned on, follow one or more of these tips to re-establish the connection to the camera.
  • Turn the camera off and back on again.
  • Disconnect the FireWire cable from your computer and reconnect it. Do the same at the camera as well. If the camera is connected through a FireWire hub, try connecting the camera directly to the computer.
  • Some cameras need to be set to "VTR", "VCR", or "DV" mode in order to communicate with a computer. Check your camera's documentation for information on how to set your camera to this mode if needed
Hope this helps.

Do i need a cord to transfer my canon ax h1 footage to my computer?

Yes you need a IEEE 1394 (FireWire/i.LINK) cable to connect your camera to your computer.
Your computer also should have a Firewire port to connect this to your computer.

Else if you have a video capture card then you can connect the video out cable and capture the video from the camera.

How do I transfer the footage I recorded to PC?

The USB cable is only to download still images recorded on the memory card, using the software that came with the camera. To download video, you need to connect to a computer with a Firewire cable, and have video editing software on your computer to communicate with the camera.

Dropped frames during capture from camcorder

Firewire cards are quite cheap, under $20, replace the card. If you still have problems then it is most likely with the camcorder.

You cannot connect a DV cable to a USB port. These are two incompatible standards. DV is also called Firewire, iLink or IEEE1394. You PC must have that kind of port for you to transfer your video from the ZR800 and you will need a DV (iLink/Firewire) cable. You cannot use USB cable they will not work. Check www.MyCableMart.com if you want an example. Most new PC come with 1 or 2 iLink/Firewire/1394 port. If you PC does not have an iLink/Firewire/1394 port then you will need to install a iLink/Firewire/1394 card (see http://www.usbfirewire.com/Parts/rr-fw-byt.html) for more information.
