Motherboard is defective & needs to be replaced with a new one.
You can find a replacement motherboard by searching on e-bay.com with the motherboard's model number. This could be found under the RAM.

How to Disassemble an HP Pavilion DV6000

The HP Pavilion DV6000 is one in a popular line of consumer-oriented laptops produced by HP. Relatively inexpensive, the Pavilion DV6000 is a good all-around value for most users. Taking apart an HP Pavilion DV6000 is not an easy chore and if you plan to use the laptop again, it is important you know what you are doing or you have a large appetite for risk. If the above doesn’t describe you, consider taking the HP in for professional repair or upgrade. Otherwise, follow the steps below to disassemble the HP Pavilion DV6000.
18385245_1.jpg?w=200 1、Prepare a clear workstation. Turn off the laptop and remove all power components including the cord and the battery. (Turn the laptop over and you will find the tab to push and pop out the dv6000 battery.) Also remove any peripheral attachments like card readers and USB devices.
90-04208-003_original-hp-pavilion-dv8000z.jpg?w=250 2、Turn the HP Pavilion dv6000 upside down and unscrew all the screws you find. Try to keep them separate by size so you can put them back in the same spot when and if you decide to reassemble the laptop.
3、Remove the hard drive and memory modules by pulling up on the rectangular compartments. The memory is located in the central compartment (remove by spreading latches and pulling up), and in most HP models the hard drive is located to one side.
4、Remove the optical CD/DVD drive by pulling on the drive face to the left and out of the laptop. Remove the WiFi card by disconnecting the gold connectors on the antenna and pulling the card from its slot.
5、Turn the hp dv6000 back over and remove the keyboard and power panel/media touch pad. Carefully pry the power panel up with a piece of hard plastic near the power button on the left side. Be careful when pulling not to yank the power connection as you might accidentally rip out a wire. Pull back the keyboard to reveal the connections. Disconnect the connections by carefully pulling on the tabs with your thumb and forefinger. If they are tight, wiggle them back and forth while pulling on them to loosen them.
6、Remove the screws that were underneath the power pack/media touch pad. Carefully pry up the top casing and set it aside.
7、Detach all visible connections to the motherboard by pulling gently on them, wiggling them if they are stuck. Gently pull up from the right side of the motherboard and remove. The HP laptop is now fully disassembled.

Have 512MB RAM. Was told to max it out because the machine is extremely slow. Has two slots with 256MB. Can I put two 512MB memory modules in those slot to increase 1G or RAM?

yes, after looking up your laptop on hp's website, I have determined the kind of memory you need; (assuming your computer is the one you put in the question, HP Pavilion ze4805us Notebook PC)

you need 2x 512 mb, 200-pin, DDR 266 memory

I looked and found some Corsair (highly respected company in computer memory) memory, for 22.99 for each DIMM (you'll need to buy 2); see link below.

If you have any more questions, please let me know!

Thanks,
Mike

Ram upgrade

The best way to find out for sure how much ram your computer could take is to do a scan with the Crucial scanner.
Go to www.crucial.com and click on "Scan My System" 1539d96.jpg

Now you're going to download the scanner. Click the checkbox to agree to the ToS and Download the Scanner.

Depending on the browser you're using, you're going to click "Run" or "Save". I'm using Google Chrome so I only got the "Save" option. Click or double-click to run the scanner.

Allow the program to run if it asks you if you're sure you want to run it.
Crucial gives you a recommended max-it-out RAM config if you wish to max out your memory.

However the pricing can be quite a little steep, so if you just want information about what kind of RAM your computer needs and what it would run best with, the section below carries this information (directly below from the above screenshot).

You can take this bit of information to your local Best Buy or Fry's or any preferred computer store and they can help you with what you're looking for.
Hope this helps :)

One long beep, two short beeps

You are correct, this does refer to a video problem. The video card controller is part of the motherboard and cannot be repaired.
There is a slight chance that the RAM is faulty or not making proper electrical connection and this is causing the video to fail because it uses part of the RAM (memory) for video memory.
Reseat the RAM (remove and reinsert a few times) then reboot your laptop.
    Best of luck.

Can I use 800MHz or more memory in my laptop

FYI, for major manufacturers like HP or Dell, you can just go to www.crucial.com and use the Memory Configurator to find out what kind of RAM your PC uses and needs. Further, they link to the RAM you need after testing so you can just buy it there if you want.

BTW, you don't say what OS you are using. If you're using XP x32 or Vista x32, Windows won't see more than 3 - 3.25 GB of that RAM if you get 4 GB. To be able to use the rest, you'll need to make sure your OS is x64.
