Some of the ink cartridges are run out and it won't let me print only in black, which hasn't run out. It keeps showing me to get a new one and how to put them in. I already know all that. I just want to print in black. Do i need all the ink colours to do that?
Unfortunately, Yes... This is usually caused by the print driver but is sometimes hardcoded into the device itself. Typically you can still use the copier function with other empty cartridges but not the print option from your PC. There are some work-arounds with Epson devices. However, with a brother device there is no known workaround at this time.

The printer would need all cartridges to have sufficient ink levels to continue printing - that's to prevent damaging the printhead. Every time a cartridge is replaced, all colors
are primed simultaneously thus the need for all cartridges to have ink.
To save on your ink investment, try printing in draft mode and by making sure that your printing preferences is set to print using black ink only.
Try this: take a small, sharp knife and make sure the air slit on the top of the cartridge goes all the way through the plastic.
You know that little tab you have pull off the top of the cartridge before inserting in the print head? There is a tiny slit under the tabto let air in, which is necessary to let the ink flow out. The slit is made very small so ink won't leak inadvertently out the top. Sometimes the slit doesn't go all the way through the plastic. When that happens, the ink can't flow.
I blew through that slit on a defective cartridge and no ink came out. I used a pen knife to open the slit (it doesn't take much) and then blew again. This time ink spewed out the bottom. My print test showed the black ink coming through. It was a bit spotty so I cleaned the print head and now the black ink comes out just like its supposed to.
You can only use the black ink cartridge without the color ink. But no need to replace them in your printer.
When you print just choose black and white for the printed text must be black not colored. But if you still received such notification...just try to replace the color ink cartridge to continue printing
As per my experience. printer with exclusive black ink alone will damage the printer easily due to unbalance printing of ink
here's a solution i came across when dealing with the same problem. apparently the printer expects all of the cartridges to be full and has a sensor to make sure they are even when only printing black. hope this helps!
your black ink cartridgegot bad sprayernozzles now you gotta replace it and why the other color one is not bad yet cus printer as will known will depend on black ink far more so the blackcartridge is heated up more times
I also have the OfficeJet 6500 and had the same problem. The black text
was printing using a mix of colored inks instead of the black ink,
resulting in a grey, fuzzy text. I finally found a solution. In each
application under Page Setup, there is an option called "Format for".
Mine had been set to "Any Printer". I changed that to "Officejet 6500
E709n [830E4A]" and now it prints the black just fine. I have a Mac
running 10.4.11. Hope this helps.
The PGI-220 is the larger ink tank and is filled with standard black ink. The PGI-221 black cartridge is the photo black. There is no way to force the printer to use the photo black cartridge (skinny one) to print documents. The photo black cartridge is only used if you print a photo. I own a Cartridge World ink refilling shop and I can't refill these cartridges yet. There is no way to reset the ink level chip without a resetter and any replacement chips you find on the internet are technically violating patent law.
The printer will take a little quantity of color ink though you are printing in black in order to get good quality. Hence it is not possible to print with just black ink cartridge without color cartridge.
