Do you have to suscribe to a fax line to use fax on... (by 2 users)

Do you have to suscribe to a fax line to use fax on the Vonage network - I rarely use the fax feature of my Win 2k Pro system but would like to retain the feature. I currently have a phone line plugged into my computer so that I can send fax. Can I just plug my Vonage connected phone into the computer dial up modem and get it to work?

No you dont, but if you have problems they're less flexible than if you have a dedicated line

It's not a matter of being dumb and wanting to put all your eggs in one basket. It's a matter of not being stupid an overpaying for services which should be very inexepensive. Vonage offers an inexpensive unlimited voice plan which allows for unlimited calls to anywhere in the US, and several other counties, at no additional cost. They have a huge feature set, and their international rates are also highly competitive. I would much rather have the reliability of a hard-wired connection, but unfortunately, no local phone company is willing to provide this type of service at anywhere near the price of Vonage, and this is why we use them. Additionally, the area that I live in is serviced by Cox for telephone service, so guess what they would put at my house if I asked for telephone service? Digital telephone service -- any better than Vonage? Also, 911 DOES work on Vonage.

As a rule VOIP may not guarentee fax transmission because it shares badwidth with your PC. Faxing failures are due to the VOIP packets getting lost, latency errors (Packets arriving late) or phase distortion. If you suffer from this the only solution is to drop your TX and RX speed. If still failing get an analog line. There is no subscription for a fax line at Vonage. Some VOIP providers do not recoomend faxing over their service. Currently there is no faxes that will send faxes reliably over VOIP. Hence when you sign up for VOIP service they test your internet bandwidth

Get a dedicated analog line. Vonage or other VOIP service does not guarantee reliable fax transmission. Shared bandwidth with VOIP and your PC's may wreak havoc with reliablility because of packet loss and latency and phase distortion at the other end. It wil be frustrating and very little you can do. Also why do people all rely on one service for on their needs. Its dumb and dangerous because you cannot access 911 through VOIP and if there is a problem with your internet you will lose your fax, telephone, internet, alarm monitoring, TV in some cases. Do not put all your eggs on one basket. Remember internet access is shared within your area. When power goes out in your area at least your analog phone will still work for calls.....
