hello

this rather long waiting, it seems you want to use your fax with your answering machine.
the simple way to do it is to change the ringing time on both the fax and the answering machine before reception.
if you want the fax to receive before the answering machine set the number rings to a shorter one to the answering machine and vice versa.

Personally, I had to set the fax machine one more ring than the answering machine. The phone cord connected to the wall goes into the Fax and the answering machine goes into the additional outlet of the fax machine provided for a telephone. I am using HP LaserJet 3200; I have set my answering machine to 4 rings and the fax to 5 rings. It works. When I put the answering machine on toll saver 2-4, it does not work. The answering machine does go off, but the fax goes immediately after it and it works. That took me an hour to find out. Good luck!

Check your manual if it has the answer hookup mode. What this does is it lets the answering machine pickup and play the message at the same time the fax is listening foe the fax tone. If it doesn't hear it the answering machine can record the mesaage otherwise if its the fax it will go into recieve mode. But check if it has answering machine jack built in. Otherwise you can check if your machine has smart ring or distictive ring. What this does it will let the fax pickup on one ring pattern while you phone/answering machine gets aleted with another ring pattern. Both ring patterns are one the same line. you simply goto your phone company and say you want get smart ring on this line. Then you will get 2 phone numbers for the same line but with different ring patterns. If your machine doesn't have a smart ring decoder you can buy a seperate unit from a phone store.

The phone line from the wall should be plugged into the L (line) connection and the the answering machine should be plugged into the middle plug for the answering machine and an optional handset or telephone into T( Tel). Then set the answer mode to answering machine. The when a call comes in it the answering machine will play its maessage and the fax will listen for the fax tone. Once detected it should go to receive.

Verify that the hookup is correct. The phone line of the fax machine should run directly from the wall to the TEL LINE of the fax machine. The phone line accompanied with the answering machine should be plugged into the TEL SET position of the fax machine.
Make sure the reception mode is set to AUTO on the fax unit.

add a router switch on your phone line, and you can add any additional devices to your one phone or fax line.

Make sure your answering machine is not set to pick up the call before the fax machine.
On the your specific machine, it will also hang up the call if you are on the line when a fax is comming in.
It has fax priority.
If you are trying to have both of those on one phone like, you can expect it to not work properly.
That machine really needs a dedicated phone line. anything else and you will be fooling yourself if you ever expect it to work right.
Just won't do it.

Next to the L plug is another plug, plug the answer machine in it. When the phone rings the fax (when in fax/ans)lets the answering machine answer first and then listens in for the fax tones. If it hears them the fax cuts in.
