Re: IBM Lapyop T42-message"Fan errors" does not turn on
Your cooling fan is reporting as damaged you need to replace the fan unit (cooling pad as well) likely service is required and unless you want to disassemble your laptop a service center would be better suited for this job.

Does it find a signal? do you get an error message? if so what is that message. if it does not find a wireless signal do you have the the wireless turned on most of the IBM thinkpad has a switch on the side of the computer to turn the wireless connection on and off. make sure it is on. please answer the 2 question above for more help
One option would be to replace the motherboard. You can use one from T40 -T43 with your monitor. I bought one on Ebay for $90 which came with the board installed to the bottom plastic tray. I only had to install my monitor, memory, keyboard, hard drive, & plastic bezel and I had a good working unit for $90.
make sure the fan is pluged in correctly and you didnt unplug anything else such as memory or etc or bump the cpu... did you put any thermal paste on the cpu when you put the fan on it? its needed to bond the too together to make a better cooling system there maybe a setting in your bios to disable fan monitoring or cpu temp etc have to look at your bios to see
How far does it get on the boot process? Does it open the operating system completely before shutting down? Do you get any error messages, and does it go to a black screen stating Windos wasn't shut down properly? Answer these and I'll have a better idea of what's going on.
That could be a video card driver issue. It seems that when the projector is connected, windows detects it a create another screen using up more memory. Try download a latest video card driver for your laptop http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/license.do?filename=mobiles/1rd635ww.exe
this is for Windows 200/XP for the IBM Thinkpad T42. If that doesn't work then you should also try updating your operating system.
Hope that helps!
