I know I'm connected to it but it has a blank (black) screen as if it were off. any suggestions out there? I tried disconnecting - cool starting - and connecting to another computer to no avail. My video application confirms that I am connected.

This problem is very often caused by dry electrolytic capacitors on the inverter board. If you have some skill with soldering you could try to change them. When buying new ones ask for LOW-ESR capacitors for switching mode power supplies (SMPS) and 105°C, they are a little bit more expensive than normal electrolytic capacitors, but are designed for this aplications so they lasts more. Normal el. caps will also works fine so when you cannot buy LOW-ESR for SMPS use normal ones.

I had the same problem...apparently the Syncmasters have some caps that are known to go bad pretty often. They will show visible swelling on the top with the slits. If they are flat they are probably good. The 820uF was too hard to find so I used a 1000uF with the same voltage. I had two caps blown on two different monitors so be sure to check them all. Hope this helps. Check out pics on BadCaps.com

The backlight is problem is caused by either a faulty inverter board or a faulty CCFL lamp.
