The best way to check for warping is to roll your cue along the tables' surface. If its either rolls unevenly or wobbles in any way than it is most likely warped.

There are several ways to prevent the warping of a pool cue:

What is the best way for me to protect my billiard cue?

The best protection for your cue stick is to invest in a good quality case. I suggest getting a hard case, although more expensive than a soft case, they are worth the investment. A case will not only protect your cue from getting damaged, but it will also protect it from humidity and moisture.

What is the best cue for beginners?

I think that you should try some different cues in the billiard halls. Try lighter and heavier ones, or maybe try different materials and this is how you figure out which one is the best for you. Also, maybe you should invest less than $100 on a cue, try it and then go for the more expensive ones...
