No. Most of the units have a function that will automatically answer a incoming fax, or allow you to screen the call before receiving the fax.

If you want faxes to work 100 percent, and they are that important. You should use a dedicated fax line.
If your faxes are not that critical, then you can share a phone line.
I never recommend a fax machine on a shared line, if the faxes are important to you.

FYI on the fax that will fax out but not receive.
One of the problems I see frequently is that the phone line is plugged into the jack that is for an answering machine or an extension phone. Make sure you have those set.
Also, be sure you have several settings turned OFF.
Many people turn ON Junk Fax, blocking, which will block most of your faxes.
Also check to see if Secure Fax is off and delay fax is off.
Another problem is that a mode called ECM ( Error Correction Mode) is turned OFF, you want ECM turned ON.
Most of the time an issue like this, Receiving not sending or sending not receiving is one of these problems.
Check those things out.
There is a set up menu on all fax machines. Make sure somehow one or more of them were not changed.
Also, you may have a memory clear feature, but be warned that if you do a memory clear, be sure to print out your phone books, and setings list. A memory clear will return the fax to its default setting and resolve many issues.

Most phone companies offer a feature called multiring which distinguishes a incoming fax from an actually call by providing different ring tones. You simply need to order the feature and you will be provided with a additional number for your fax and then program your fax to use the feature (also called distictive ring).
