Is this tv a hdtv

Yes it is considered a HDTV. It displays all of the resolutions
( 480i,480p,720p,1080i). The manufacturer says "With an integrated tuner to display HDTV broadcast and unscrambled cable HD programs, the high brightness widescreen 42MF231D delivers razor-sharp images, digital connectors and smart AV presets".

How do I get my set out of HD mode?

You cannot get the TV out off what ever resolution it is being fed with, 720p in = 720p display (HD), 480i in = 480i display (non HD).
The video signals dictate the resolution TV display.
May I ask what kind of problem you are having?

720p is putting out signal of 480i or p only

Your Tv has its own settings for high definition.

Look in your manual for appearance setting and turn the tv to 720p high definition.

That should be enough. OH! And make sure your PS3 is set for HD output too! My HD tv downconverts occasionally when the Uverse box shuts off and defaults to low def output.

I just bought a 50" LG tv plasma and its supposed to be a 720....

Well it depends on what your watching on the tv. If you hook up an HDMI cable with a dvd player or other accessory, such as HD cable box on an HD channel it will swap to 720p.

Convert 480i to 720p

Turn off cable box.
Turn on TV.
Hold down media and guide for a few seconds.
On TV pick the resolution you want. Your choices are 480i, 480p, 720p, some wide screen resolutions and 1080i.
Save the results.
You should be good to go.

The display only goes between normal and zoom

This is an EDTV capable of 1080i over component cables. It will also display 480p & 720p. Most likely its the video source determing the resolution you are seeing.

How to get 1080 resolution from my plasmaI have the 6842 pe EDTV

DVDs are 480p
HD-DVD or Blu-Ray DVD is 720p or 1080i or 1080p

you cannot increase resolution, if you want to play a 480p/i video on a 1080p/i or 720p screen, you are merely stretching the picture.

If there is any kind of box that tells you it can convert 480i/p to 1080p/i or 720p(high definition) it is simply stretching the picture.

you can convert 1080p/i or 720p(high definition) to 480i/p as you are taking out information from the video to make it smaller.
