Question about Sharp R-1870 Convection/Microwave Oven

1 Answer

I have R-9X58 timer that stopa @ 5min when in convection mode

I have R-9X58 microwave that stops @ 5min when in convection mode. It stops heating from the 1.5kw element before it gets hot enough, if you reset it stops at the same point again. Between my son, sister rentals and self we have 4 Sharps doing the exact same thing The timer seems to be the same type used in all of them. I would like to have a go at the repair as I have had 6 Sharp microwaves myself that all had done the same thing. Also the display is quiet dim but this is minor as we need convection oven first. Sharp needs to be made aware of issue as service cost varies greatly. Please help sincerely, Terry Dowsett canabus@mpx.com.au

"Convection cycle runs 4 minutes and 15 seconds then shuts down."

In most cases, this is a bad thermistor, but it may also be loose wiring, or a problem on the control panel.

The thermistor should be on the top of the chassis and it will look like one of the attached drawings.

You will have to remove the outer cover of the oven to get to it.

THERMISTOR TEST

Room Temperature 68°F(20°C) - 86°F(30°C)

Resistance Approx. 350k ohms - 155k ohms

(The higher the room temperature, the lower the resistance, and vice-versa).

If the meter does not indicate above resistance, replace the thermistor.

Also, if the thermistor is caked with grease, or it's rusty, it will need to be replaced.

If it has a broken lead, it cannot be repaired unless you spot weld or braze it, and if you get it too hot, it will be destroyed.

To find the thermistors, you can visit Sharp's Australian support site and click on the "Spareparts Outlets" link under "Frequented Resources".

My kitchenaid microwave will not heat in microwave mode. In fact the turntable starts and stops and the display blinks intermittenly. In convection oven mode everything works fine - It heats, turntabl

The magnetron is the main part that gives out microwaves to heat the food. As the convection bit is working this points towards the microwave bits.
The magnetron has a main diode, fuse and transformer to run the microwave bit, any of these could be faulty. A word of warning though, there are extremely high voltages inside microwaves, even when unplugged in the main capacitor. Also to repair this section you will need to be a fully qualified engineer to even order parts for this.

I cannot find a free one, but since this was given to you, this small price might be worth it.

No heat generated in microwave or convection oven mode

I just read that starting the microwave as usual and then slightly pressing in the handle (you can hear the heater(?) come on will make the heat come on. Tried it and it works. My repairman told me it needed a new magnetron ($700) but that was totally wrong. I will be trying another repairman to replace handle mechanism.

Microwave plate turner keeps spinning even with door closed and microwave turned off

My microwave is doing this as well; It's a frigidaire model #FGMV154CLFA.

After using the microwave part (it is also convection), the light stays on in the microwave and the turner keeps turning.

And I've only used the convection part of my microwave a couple times and I'm not sure if I was successful. While trying to cook something in convection mode, I pressed convection, then pressed the temp i wanted, then convection, then keyed in the time I wanted the item to cook. The microwave started and the timer started counting down but the countdown stopped with 8 minutes left? I left it alone to see what would happen and it never finished so I restarted the process again.

PS..I've never gotten an error code

Amana OTR Convection Microwave runs 59 seconds and shuts off

This sounds like either a thermistor or a damper switch/motor problem.
Amana's technical support line is 866-426-2621. This is the commercial side but they should be able to get you in touch with the domestic side.

Sharp mdl R-1870 convection microwave runs for 1 min

This is a problem in one of the damper-related components, most likely the switch, but it may also be the motor or the damper door.

The damper is a door inside that opens or closes depending on cooking mode. If the controller senses that the door is not in the right position, it will shut down the cook cycle.

Sharp models stop after 59 seconds.

See the attached sample photo.
