Question about Chamberlain Powerdrive PD422D 1/2 HP Security Plus Screw Drive Garage Door Opener

1 Answer

Garage opener cannot close, just replaced gears.

HI, I have a chamberlain 1245 opener that will not close more than a foot or so before reversing. In order to get the door closed, I had to pull the rip-cord release and manually slide it closed. When I tried to re-engage the door to the rip-cord part by pressing the close button, it moved the same distance before reversing, even with the down force cranked to highest. For that reason, I know the door resistance is not the issue as it cannot move the chain alone at highest down force to reconnect the door. I got into this predicament after our opener failed due to the plastic gear being worn completely out. I replaced that gear and the worm gear, regreased everything, hit the button and it opened the garage just fine. It just cannot seem to close it. I have tried to troubleshoot this a lot, as this is the second of two identical units. One difference which may or may not be related is this opener’s motor spindle actually moves slightly laterally while trying to close. In other words, if you are on a ladder and looking at the worm gear when you hit the button, the whole gear moves about ¼” while rotating before moving back when it stops. The inch of exposed spindle at the other side of the motor can be seen moving as well. The other opener has no movement like this. It worked a week ago. Any ideas before I call a pro to put in a new unit?

If the unit has photo eyes that could be your problem. not reattching the 4 wireing harness from the limit assy. can cause a similar issue.

Chain on garage door not moving but motor is running. Model 1255SCR 1/2 HP.

This means that the nylon drive gear in your unit has been stripped. This can be replaced and is common in openers. You can get a replacement at chamberlain.com. It does take moderate skill to do and should take about an hour to complete. You can order the gear by itself or the whole drive shaft. Make sure and set the limits per the manual and do a 2x4 safety reversal test afterward. Thanks BB

DOES THE LIGHT FLASH AND MAKE A CLICKING SOUND??
YOU DIDN'T MENTION IT BUT IF IT DOES THE PROBLEM IS LIKELY IN THE SAFETY EYES.

YOU COULD HAVE A BAD GEAR KIT OR SIMPLY A SENSITIVITY ADJUSTMENT THAT IS OFF.

TRY INCREASING THE DOWN SENSITIVITY ABOUT 1/8 TURN.

IF THIS DOESN'T HELP UNPLUG THE UNIT AND TAKE OF THE COVER IS YOU FIND WHITE PLASTIC POWDER THE GEARS ARE STRIPPED AND A GEAR KIT IS NEEDED.

You should check the gears inside the box, After years , the gears get dry and die, you can by online or from Sears the kit and replace the old gears. I just changed mine...not too difficult :) .

Chamberlain Power Drive 1/2 HP - motor runs but does not move chain

I have the same problem. I just removed the cover and discovered a nylon gear had been worn out. I found lots of shavings inside the cover. The nylon gear is beneath the exterior chain gear. I am looking for information on how to replace it, if I can find the part. If you decide to look at yours, unplug the power and remove the sheet metal screws securing the bottom portion of the cener cover to the front and back covers. Then just remove the upper screws from the center cover. Good luck.

Have NO IDEA what you are saying. Do you mean you adjust limits and chain moves too far? Or is chain not moving. Bad gears. Toss unit unless you are handy and can rebuild gears.

Garage door model PD200

Take the back cover off and see if the Gear that turns the shaft that operates the chain to lift or close is in good condition.
The gear is probably plastic and 3" or 4" in diameter.
UNPLUG THE OPENER AND DISCONNECT THE POWER BEFORE DOING THE ABOVE.SAFETY IS ALWAYS FIRST.
