Question about Leviton 104-05611-2WS 15A Decora Single Pole Illuminated Switch with Ground

1 Answer

Connecting Leviton Decora light switch.

A tenant was conplaining of receiving a small shock when he touched the light switch.

I am totally confused. I have a closet light switch that has three black wires (2 top, 1 bottom left side, and 1 top right side) two white wires and one green ground.

When I removed the cover and switch, I noticed that there were two black wires connected to the light switch, plus the ground. I removed the switch from the wires and was seeing what I had and now I cannot figure out how to reconnect the wire to make the switch work. I think two black wires were connected to each other and then one of the wires was connected to the switch. Then a single wire was connected to the switch. I cannot figure out the correct order to make the closet light work and not affect the other lights in the home.

The best I could do was get the closet light to come on and unless it stays on, the lights in the baths and kitchen will not work. I have never seen a light switch that could control the other home lights. Other attempts at remembering the correct wiring method will cause the lights in the baths and kitchen to not come on.

What is the correct wiring I need to connect the black wires back to the switch, get the closet light to come on, not affect the kitchen and bath lights and remove any shock that my come afterwards?

Thanks for your help.

At the switch you have a feed wire coming in this brings in power which originates in the electric panel. You also have a feed or feeds goings out to other lts or switches, this you seem to have on the switch. instead of the closet switch loop.undo all the wires. find the only hot this is the one wire you can touch to the others and make different lts come on i reccomend getting a electric tester to do this. FInd the wire that goes to the closet lt. Once your sure put it to the side. wirenut all other wires together with the hot wire. this makes all other switches independantly hot. connect the hot to the switch and the closet lt to switch. I HOPE THIS MAKES SOME SENSE TO YOU . let me know if i can help

Humming and failure to dim

Bad dimmer. Probably not using a high enough watt rated switch. Add up the total of all bulbs to be dimmed and get appropriately rated dimmer. 8x60 watt bulbs=480 watts. Make sure dimmer is rated high enough.

How do I hook up a Leviton Decora no 5601... I have a white, a red, and a black wire

Wiring is unclear without more information.

Question posted under 4-way switch.
Wiring sounds like 3-way switch is possible.
And Leviton 5601 is single pole switch.

Add a comment and say what load the switch controls. Load means light, fan, motor, etc.
Say if another switch controls same load.
And include what type of device you are replacing.
Include what screws and screw colors are on old device.

When you add a comment, it sends email, and I will respond to comment.

Two slots on back of dimmer. one has single black the other has black AND ground (green) wire. Is this correct???

Yes, this is a single pole dimmer switch. Connect the green wire to the ground wire in your electrical switch box and connect one black wire to the power (common wire) in the switch box and the other to the wire going to the incandesant light fixture. (Standard dimmers cannot be used with CFL type bulbs).

You should be working fine! Remember to turn off the power to the wiring your connecting this dimmer to to prevent both getting a shock and from damaging the dimmer during installation.

Hope you found this very helpful and best regards!

Touch dimmer malfunction

sounds like a loose connection to me, check to make sure all connections are tight. sometimes the bulbs themselves don't make a good connection in there socket.

u will have to take the switches out of the wall box and make sure the wires are tight, whether they are on screws or wires connected to wires. if it is wires to wires u may have to take that apart to make sure u don't have a bad connection there.

if it is none of that, then it is time to replace the switches

The three black wire are as follows: One is the hot wire. One feeds the closet light. One feeds the lights for the kithen and bath. Turn off the power at the circuit breaker or fuse panel and disconnect all three black wires and be sure they aren't touching anything. Turn the power back on and using a test light or meter determine which black wire is live. Turn the power back off and mark the hot wire with a pen, marker, or piece of electrical tape. Connect the wire you marked with a wire nut to one of the other two black wires. Turn the power back on. If the closet light comes on, that is the wire that you want to connect to one of the terminals of the switch. If the lights in the kitchen and bath now work, leave these wires connected together and connect the third wire to one of the switch terminals. Turn the power back off. While the hot wire and the wire for the kitchen might have both connected to the switch terminal, this is no longer allowed by code. Instead take another piece of wire of the same type and connect it to the hot wire and the kitchen wire with the wire nut and connect the other end to the other switch terminal. There should be a green ground screw terminal attached to the metal frame of the switch. Using a green or bare copper wire connect this to the ground wires in the switch box. Reinstall the switch and turn the power back on. Everything should be good now. If the fuse blows or the breaker trips, replace the switch.
