Solved my problem it was not the home mode-it was using the cable cord instead of the av cords. You cannot use the cable (antenna) you have to use the av cords & connect thru the av on cable box & av on the tv.

Ambient sensor on M420VT is very erratic. With no change in room ambient lighting, the picture fades to almost black; picture can be restored by hitting any button on remote control (e.g. menu button). ...

The Ambient Light Sensor isn't perfect, but if you're having the same problem I had, it's not an issue with the Ambient Light Sensor. Rather, your solution will be turning DCR (Dynamic Contrast Ratio) to Off.
Go to the PICTURE menu and choose Picture Mode. You can turn off DCR in one of two ways: Choose "Custom" and set it manually, or choose "Movie" or "Game" for your picture mode. (The "Movie" and "Game" default settings include DCR=off, whereas "Home" will include DCR=on.) Not sure about the defaults on the other modes but you can try them.
Keep in mind that you will need to make these changes for each input (HDMI, Comp, AV, DTV/TV). Also, if you continue to have trouble you can try playing with Adaptive Luma under the "Custom" settings.

Probably you are in "shop" mode of TV. Try to reset your TV and go through initial setup. Most important - choose "home" instead of "shop" when asked during initial setup. Resetting - keep up arrow pressed and switch of TV. Keep the button pressed when TV automatically switch back on. This will reset TV to factory defaults.

If the green light stay's on but no picture, meaning black screen! Then you have a bad back light inverter. You can order this at www.shopjimmy.com, select sony then your model number.

If you are somewhat handy you could do it yourself! but it requirestaken tv fully apart. There are a lot of screws that should be baggedseparate as you go along. To ensure tv can be reassembled. follow thesesteps or have a expert do it!

1) remove shell (casing)
2) remove second layer, this will have your signal boards on it (a/v etc...)
3the back light inverter has a metal cover over it, with very tinyscrews. Also you will see multiple wire plugs going into it. Usuallywhite/pink or white/blue.

If this sounds to confusing Irecommend having an expert do this work! If you have found this helpful. Good luck!!
