Question about Panasonic DMR-EZ28K DVD Recorder

1 Answer

Panasonic DMR-EZ28 and DMR EZ27 both freeze up every other day.

I have one of each (EZ28 and EZ27) both are plugged into monster power surge protectors in different parts of the house. Both units freeze up about every other day. Somtimes these freeze up during recording, but often they are just off (with disk loaded and timer program waiting to record). When they are off the clock freezes at a certain time. In all cases the only way to unfreeze the unit it is to either unplug wait and plug in or push the reset button. I have been reseaching and have read about freeze up problems with many other DVD recorders. This stuff NEVER happened with the old VCRs. What good is a DVD recorder that you can't rely on to record, because it freezes up all the time. Will a voltage regulator help? Will anything help? Are there any companies making a DVD recorder that is not a piece of ****, frought with glitches?

Same prob. Had ez27 and returned to Panasonic 4 times. They never were able to fix it, so I asked for and got a replacement (ex28). Now that one does the same thing. It totally locks (freezes) up about every other day at exactly 11:57am. Ain't that weird? This is with unit turned off, DVD ram disc inserted for recording, programming set, etc. No rhyme nor reason. I've read of this on many web sites with no solutions. WOW, if someone out there has a fix for this, or at least some ideas as to cause, I'd really appreciate. Been at this for a year now with a really nice recorder that certainly has a mind of it's own.

I have done some further trouble shooting and have found out that this unit freezes for several reasons. ronbo14's problem is probably that he has the clock setting on automatic. When the unit goes to try to find the time and can not, it freezes (what criminal ****** thought that was a good idea). In the past if a unit could not find the time it just kept going with the time it had and tried again later, but not the EZ28 or EZ27, they just freeze. The only solution is to set clock setting to manual (which means you have to readjust the time manually to keep it correct about every other week).

This does not end the list of retarded reasons that the unit freezes. If you have the quick on set to 'on', OR if you have a timer recording set (with blank disk inserted), either of these conditions amounts to the unit being on standby. When on standby the unit is actually watching whatever channel is was last tuned to. If that channel goes out for even a second, the unit freezes (note even if the unit is not on or recording but just on standby, if the channel it is tuned to goes out for a second the unit freezes). I have the Sony equivalent running along side of the EZ28 (same cable line, same surge protector, same channel and recording program) and it never freezes. So, obviously the people who designed the EZ27 and EZ28 need to be replaced with people who are not so criminally retarded.

rac...thanks so much for the feedback. I have set my clock to manual and turned off the quick start feature. Let's see what that does... I really appreciate your help and will let you know if it acts up again. Best, Ronbo14

Panasonic was king of teh VCR world. They failed miserably with their DVD recorders. I think they had some real lemons on their hand. Now it seems they've stopped making them. I had the same exact problems with the DMR-EZ28 Panasonic DVD recorder I had. It worked liked a charm for about 9 months. I recorded about 50 discs with it. Then it started developing disc format detection errors and making weird sounds in the process even though I was using the same disc band and model as before. Unfortunately, this series of Panasonics were one of the few that could record/play 8.5GB double-layer (DL) discs. Mine was purchased from Best Buy. Now the only items that can play the doubler layer discs it did successfully record are my Sony bluray player and the computer's DVD drive. I was shocked to have this problem with a Panasonic product. I'm now going to try the Toshiba DR430 tunerless DVD recorder that sells for about $100. Lots of good reviews. No double layer disc support but I'll live without it.

The orignal posting at the very top was mine, many years ago. I have since figured out what the problem is. Whenever there is a slight glitch in the digital signal that the DVD recorder is 'watching' (whether recording or not), the unit freezes and needs to be reset before working again.

Using the 'instant on' feature makes the unit continually 'watch' whatever station it was last on, so if that signal glitches, the unit still freezes, even if it is off.

The only DVD recorder that I found that does not have this problem (or any of the other problems that I have run into from many other DVD recorders) is the Toshiba DR 570.

I have been using two of these Toshiba units for many, many years with NO PROBLEMS AT ALL! This unit is now only available used or refurbished. Most people would rather pay a monthly fee for a DVR service.

I have the panasonic DMR EZ 28 for 4 months. I have beendownloading home videos from my camcorder through the IN 2 port without difficulty until yesterday; Now, when I attach my camcorder through the IN 2 port, I can hear the video, BUT not see by video on the TV monitor; I reconnected the camcorder through the IN 1 port in the back of the DMR and it works, but it's a pain to be working in the back of the machine. Why aren't I seeing the video (but hearing it) when connecting to the IN2. Faulty connection??? Did I program something wrong???

My panasonic dmr ez28 keeps coming up with 'self check did not complete' 1) press OK or 2) Press power to restart. I have tried both but the unit then freezes. Can anyone suggest what next?

The Self Check procedure is like the POST on a computer: upon starting the processor makes a simple test of all the hardware components. If it fails then the defect is very important : a critical part situated on the mainboard has failed and it stops the loading of the firmware . Since all parts are glued then the mainboard will have to be replaced. This will be so expensive that it's going to be cheaper to just buy a new recorder.

I had the same problem with my first unit, took it back they had to unscrew it all to get me back my DVD. They gave me a new machine. Checked it out seems it's a Auto Tuning problem, i went into the menu and restricted the auto tuning, problem is now, every time i switch it on it wants to update the tuning!! Pain in the ass. Contemplating taking it back again. Panasonic said it must be a one off, they hadn't had any other complaints!! Yeah right.
