If you have a lot of desktop icons (meaning more than 10) you have too many. Try deleting them and opening your files from the start menu. Also run a disk clean up by going to start>all programs>accessories.system tools>disk clean up. Make sure you check ALL boxes and let it finish. If you have not done this in a while it will take a while to complete and you should let it run by its self with no other programs running. The more often you do this the less time it will take and the faster your system will be. I do one every two weeks. Then go to microsoft update and update all updates offered. Go back to the site and check for updates untill there are none left. If you havent updated your system there could be more updates for the updates. Dont rely on just your automatic updates. Physically do them from time to time. I would go thru your add and remove programs and uninstall any programs that you do not use, then run a defrag. You do this the same way you got to disk clean up just choose defrag instead. Let this run untill complete with no other programs running. Restart. Hope this helps.

Blank screen

A white blank screen? That sounds like the virus changed your display settings. Click Ctrl+Alt+Del to get to the task manager. Press and hold the Ctrl key plus the Alt Key then hit the Del key. When the task manager opens up Click File at the upper left corner of the window then select New Task RUN. When the create New Task Window opens type: explorer.exe and hit OK. See if it starts populating your desktop icons and shows the start menu and task bar. If so, the virus changed your settings.

To change your display background click Start/Control Panel and look for Display or Appearance and Personalization. When it opens select the Desktop tab and change the desktop background. Hopefully the white will go away.

You may have to get into Safe Mode to do the above if the virus disabled the Task Manager.

Welcome screen comes up but when I click on user name it goes to desktop screen background with no icons

This can be fixed..

Press and holt Control+Alt keys and then press Del key one...
Then you need to select the option task manager..
In task manager select file at the top...
Under file select new task and type explore.exe in lower case and push enter..
You must be able to see the start menu and the desktop icon...
If you still dont find the desktop icon - right on desktop and select show all desktop icons...
The problem should be fixed...

No icons or tool bar on desktop at startup

In your desktop, Right click your mouse and properties will show and look for show desktop option. And then move your mouse to the bottom of your computer screen, if toolbar will show, then your toolbar is set to automatic hide. Change the settings in your Taskbar and Start Menu Properties and change there the settings, uncheck the auto hide task bar.

Icons and start upmenu bar absent

explorer.exe is what displays the icons and the startup bar on the screen so try opening explorer.exe from the task manager. Or if it is already running close it and then reopen it.

Task-bar & start-menu disappeared

Sounds as if the video card is going down. This is a common problem on these laptops. Have you checked Device Manager to see if the drivers are installed. Hit Win key and pause then select hardware and Device Manager. If nothing seems out of place there then I would most certainly suspect the video card. This is part of the motherboard and not replaceable.

As another check try connecting the laptop to an external monitor via the VGA connector at the back. The resolution problem should be resolved then.
