Question about Garmin GPS Devices

1 Answer

We were sent over the worse mountain roads going from Lexington SC to Franklin NC. It most certainly was a dangerous way to go on windy mountain roads. The NUVI indicated it was the fastest way and the shortest. Is there some way to only use major highways. MapQuest used interstates all the way when we checked later. Donna Allen

Welcome to FixYa:

I am not sure which model of the Nuvi you are using but I have the Nuvi 660 and can feel your pain. What use is going over a mountain or down roads made of gravel and miles from civilization only because it is technically a "shorter route"

So here are the basic directions to change that setting and get the Nuvi to keep you on the highways and interstates. If it varies too much, either respond with your model number or go to Garmin.com and get the manual for your model:

Go to SETTINGS
then NAVIGATION
click on ROUTE PREFERENCES

You should find what you need here, but to tell the Nuvi which type of roads to avoid and which ones to stick to:

go back to the SETTINGS menu
touch NAVIGATION again
and click on AVOIDANCES

Hope this helps and be sure to keep us updated!

No, the unit does not cause cancer. There are no dangers with using the unit, unless you take your eyes off the road while driving for long periods of time.

Where can iget a gps with irish road maps

You can get a satnav with Irish Road maps at any Halfords, or PC World shop or if you prefer to buy on line you can get one from http://www.mysatnav.ie/?gclid=CNXD4e3qlKcCFYVN3god71FJoQ

I'd recommend any garminn model. Please note that gps when used in cars, motor bikes etc are called satnavs while when used as hand held navigation systems for mountain hiking etc are called gps. Although both are gps receivers you don't want to end up with the wrong type of system.

Was going north and the map said i was going south

Are you sure you were heading north at that particular time?
Gps show your direction at that moment and time. Just because your road is going north does not mean that the road is always going north, sometimes they change directions to go around obstacles that were in the way of the road design, IE mountain, town, river.
The sign for the highway may say your are heading north when in actuality you are heading south to go around something.

The gps will not take into consideration the curve of the road, it just tells you the direction you are heading. Hope this helps.

Takes us on backroads instead of highways.

I don't have the same model gps as you, but I can tell you that there probably is a setting in the preferences somewhere, that you can set to what preferred roads you would take. Just look around in all the menus and sub menus, it has to be there.

Took me on a 2 lane route for 100 miles instead of freeway!

These things are miles from perfect. However, if you knew of the freeway route, you should have taken it. Remember, a PND is only useful when you don't know where you are and can often be confusing if you're using it to direct you to place that you know.

Floating in space even on interstate

As I always suggest, your maps might be off if you haven't updated since you bought the device, or haven't updated in quite some time. Run the device through TomTom Home to update your maps, and it should provide the fix

Map problem

Check the zoom level, you may bee zoomed out too far to see the streets. The 660 is an old model, but if I remember correctly the settings are the same. Go into your settings, then map, then change your details (usually 5 different settings ranging from least to normal to greatest.)
