Very dark pictures

hi melissa,
your problem is the focusing areas, im sorry that I do not know how to turn it off, the rectangle you see is the area is focusing on, and the darkness is what the camera doesnt focus on, try reading the manual, or turning it off yourself.

Are you using a lens hood? Is your ISO set too high?

Your aperature setting is too close. Go to menu and go to your aperature setting it allows how much light is let in open it up a setting at a time until you have enough light to get great photos.

My Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT is taking pictures darker than normal. Why?

First, to test be sure you are in Automatic mode. The dial should be on the Green Box setting. If its on other settings its in manual mode and can be set wrong. take a test picture in this mode, If its looking normal, then you were either int he wrong mode or your manual settings were off. But if they are still dark try your ISO settings, if too low a number it will result in dark images. For example ISO 100 is perfect for outdoor daylight, but ISO 400 is better indoors.

Next try the F stop settings and arppreture. If things improve, you have found the issue. This camera is professional grade so it will do exactly what its set to do even if the outcome is not what you want!

Whe all else fails use the menu and reset the camera to factory defaults.

Really Dark Viewfinder

That would explain the darkness if the lens is stopped down. It would seem the aperture control is faulty on the camera body. Normally, the aperture remains open until you take the picture. It is only closed down while the shutter is open.

Dark pictures

Check whether the ISO rating set in the camera is correct. Also, if the images are grainy and dark, it may be an issue with the exposure.

Dark shadow on right side of picture

sounds like a shutter leaf dropping into the image. however, they are usually horizontal and more likely to manifest when in landscape mode. (horizontal, normal)
try using flash pointed up to ceiling.
also, could need to check for auto sync speed setting. usually 1/125 to 1/60. if its off, it could be catching the shutter in the wrong place.
check manual for settings for using flash.
