Acer aspire 5735z laptop with vista on it.. when you click on my computer it does not show the dvd and wont' run anything... when you put a cd in a light does go on and sound like its running. in the device manager it kinda shows a dvd/ cdrom thing and says drivers are working... how does one get the computer to detect it and make my cd's work... HELP...
I have the exactly the same problem. I tried a dvd-rom cleaner but that was a stupid idea because the computer can't detect that either!

Re: acer aspire can't find the dvd to play cd's
In the device manager, select the DVD ROM and UNINSTALL / REMOVE the device. Restart Windows . . . did this work? If not, boot into your CMOS and see if the drive is being detected by the motherboard... if yes, look further and make sure the settings for the drive are correct. Make sure that all IDE interfaces are enabled in the CMOS settings (both)

Unless you have created a shortcut on the desktop for the cd-rom drive, you will have to go into "My Computer" and unless you are having drive issues, you should see the icon for your drive there. If you would like to create a shortcut on your desktop, right-click on your drive icon and select "create shortcut". It may tell you that "it cannot create an icon there would you like to place it on the desktop", click yes.
updates can be slow, and lead to more updates sometimes.you should goto windows update, let it search for important updates then install them.even if it takes a while, once you do that it should be fine.and configure updates to auto download but ask to install.
Acer Aspire Model generally comes with a bison web cam driver.
To use the web cam search for an application that installed in program files. In windows Xp web cam can be used by double clicking camera icon present in my computer. If you are using windows vista or other operating system you need an camera application software,to use it. Without application software you can use your web camera only in messengers, for example yahoo messenger. If u had an yahoo messenger login and click on view my web cam,now you can see your face in your laptop. So first thing is search for an application software installed on your laptop.
Most likely the drive is dead, they die from time to time, sometimes they can last years and sometimes but less frequently they just go belly up one day and its very typical for the Cmos and computer to recnognize there is a device there, but Windows cannot access it at all. Try purchasing an external USB or Firewire if your PC has a port for it - and you can then access your CD/s that way. Otherwise, you can purchase a new drive and have it installed. Locating the drive replacement may require some research and time depending on the notebook's specific model number. Also check to see if your PC is still under warranty by any chance, that drive would be covered in most cases.
again this is a classic vista problem, i have worked with vista machines for a while now and still i can't find the reason vista does this. I did find a soloution that worked on a few machines but not on all!! i put the computer to sleep and woke it again using the on/off button and it came back. try this !!!
