Question about Abit Computers & Internet

1 Answer

Usb power always on.

I have a ABIT KD7 series motherboard and power is always present on the usb ports whether the computer is on or off. I don't see any options in the bios to control it.

Power remains on the usb port when the computer is off. My usb webcam has leds that provide light in low light situations and they remain on at night when computer is off.

Apparently the on board USB ports are all powered by the 5V standby power. I have ordered a USB port card to plug into my PCI slot. It should be powered by the regular 5V supply and solve my problem.

The USB port card solved my problem. The USB power turns off when the computer is off. Thanks for your suggestions. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all.

Try setting up your CMOS by setting it to optimized default settings, then save and exit. turn off your computer, plug off the power cord from your Battery Backup or from your AC supply. if still didn't worked out. try replacing your power supply

Rear USB doesn't recognize USB keys or other USB appliances

Hi,

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers for your usb ports?
Not all usb ports are powered, this is why there is an external power supply required sometimes. Does the usb stick work in any other port or on another computer - check your manual and see if the port you are plugging it into is powered or not if you don't have the manual it can be downloaded from the website. Having said that it is rare for a usb stick to require power..sometimes after continued use you can get a short on your port that can also cause issues and be very hard to spot, especially if its intermittent. Also check for any grunge that may have accumulated within the port.
I have also had some usb sticks that were just temperamental, try another in the same port as they are pretty cheap these days for small ones.
Hope this helps and happy to help further if required.
Here is a link to your manual.
Cheers

I had to change the motherboard as it failed

Look at the front panel of the computer you will see the connections you have. Should be power, reset, power led, usb etc. These are connected to your current motherboard and most times all the connections will be labeled in the case, on the wire connector ends. IE the end that connects to the motherboard. The only exception to this is the usb ports, and they can be hooked up to new usb connectors on the motherboard. Also note, read i said READ the proper way to connect the usb to the motherboard, this is usually a one shot deal, get it wrong and you kill that usb connector.

Is the board rated for the faster speed? Just putting in faster chips will not work unless the motherboard supports that speed.

There's a photo of your motherboard here: http://www.techspot.com/reviews/hardware/abit_vt6x4/ You see the part labeled "USB header for two extra USB channels." That is where you'd connect any additional USB ports. When you say you have two ports on the front of the stack, I assume you mean on the front of your computer case? Front mounted USB are handy, and just about standard on most cases. Just connect the cable from them to that connector and you should be ready to go. If you're not sure which way to connect it, just try one - you won't break anything by connecting it backwards (you'll just have to switch it to get them to work).
