RCA rear projection tv picture bowed to middle. Red Green Blue colors have been seperated on screen.

Problem first noted when I left the living room to see the TV turned off automatically. Turned on TV to see RGB spectrum seperated and the picture is bowed up the middle. Bad circuitry, fuses, convergence board, etc???? Not really sure what the problem is but I searched the internet for similar problems but no one really mentioned that their own TV shut automatically, then to show a bowed picture to the middle and the RGB spectrum seperated.

    I'm going to guess this repair is going to cost a lot of $$$$$$$$$$$ unless maybe I try to repair it on my own.

    Hey. I thought you might be interested to note that I found this for your TV.http://www.tvrepairkits.com/xcart/rca-r5... . Apparently you're not the only one this has affected. It's only $36.95 so it doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

If I had to guess I would say it's either the DLP chip or the prism. Simply put the lamp lights the DLP chip which directs the light into a prism and then onto the TV screen. The prism or prisms are responsible for aligning the colors correctly. The DLP chip is essentially a million little moving mirrors which direct light

If you're at all comfortable with electronics you might want to open the TV up to take a look. You might get lucky and find something obviously wrong with the TV. Sometimes adhesives melt and parts slip out of place. If your DLP chip is blown there isn't much you can do. You're probably right that this would cost a lot to fix and not be worth it.

    Tried looking for the auto convergence menu with my remote but now that option is gone.

  • Anonymous Jul 24, 2012

    Probably going to open up the TV. I don't understand why it shut off automatically when it was fine a few minutes ago before the shutdown.

SOURCE: RCA model HD 52W59 rear projection TV

Appreciate the direct "Ask Me" and your understanding. Again our apologies for any inconvenience due to the disconnection.

With your indulgence, to your concern:

  • Ifno amount of adjustment could align/merge the images, then it would besafe to assume that the convergence amplifiers are faulty.Additionally, the bowed effect strengthens the likelihood of faultyconvergence board.
  • This is a known common repair, so much sothat most owners are performing DIYs (do-it-yourself) for those unitsno longer under warranty. Should you consider the DIY, then pls findbelow specifics which may be helpful otherwise pls bear in mind that ifthe unit is still under warranty, a DIY could and would void saidwarranty. Your choice then of course, warranty repair or DIY.
To the actual repair:
  • Boardreplacement - by far the fastest, the easiest. As the term/nameimplies, identify/remove the erring board, seek/order a replacement,swap, align and the jobs is done.
  • Component level - thecomponents within the board are tested using a DVM or a VOM, thedefective parts identified, order a repair kit, desolder the defectivecomponents, replace them with the new components from the kit, cleanthe solder work on the underside of the PCB (printed circuit board),reassemble, align and the work is completed.
Should you consider board replacement:
  • Initially, pls determine the suffix (if there is) of your model HD52W59, something like YX22;
  • Pls goto http://www.tritronicsinc.com/;
  • pls click on the "CATALOG" button top near left;
  • in the "search for:", pls select Model Number;
  • in the next (right) box, enter HD52W59 plus the YX?? and click on the Search button;
  • on the next page, click on the model number on the left to confirm;
  • in the "Enter Description..." box, pls type "conv" less the quotes and click on Submit button;
  • you would be interested with the Convergence Amp board;
  • Alternately,you can call Tritronics for a 24 hr order. Pls get numbers to theiroffice nearest you fromhttp://www.tritronicsinc.com/storefrontB2CWEB/jsp/b2ccontacts.jsp.
Should you consider component level repair:
  • Plscontact Slinteriors @ http://servicemanuals.vstore.ca/. They sell arepair kit that includes the 2 STK 392-??? ICs, resistors and picofuses.
  • Additionally or more importantly, they supply them as a completekit PLUS an illustrated instruction sheet detailing the repairprocedures.
Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.

Picture is bowed at top and bottom picture perfect in middle of screen; colors seperating in corners convergrence is perfect

Projection sets have two very common problems outlined below.

The first common problem is convergence

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. The TV can also shut down when the convergence starts to fail.

Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith, RCA and others.

You can more info and a DIY convergenece repair kit with instructions from TV Repair Kits using the link at the end of this article.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped or bowed
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2 - Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture

The picture looks 3D

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right. And you should be able to get the grid straight.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a fix

Green convergance wont adjust, bowed screen

Green really shouldn't be adjusted, you adjust red and blue to the green. When a color is bowed that indicates that a part or two are bad, probably the convergence output IC's and possibly a fuse or fusible resister. You may need a tech to come adjust it for you because after replacing IC's the adjustments should be done in the servicers menus not just in the consumers menus.

This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you are handy and can follow directions. You can get complete repair kits from TvRepairKits.com or click here. Covergence and Bowed Picture Problem

can you adjust any color of convergence in user menu blue, or red up or down left or right. if you can make any up or down left or right adjustments on any color then the likelihood it wont be a convergence ic. it would be a output resistor. so see if you can get any movement. with it being bowed i was suspect an convergence ic.
