Question about GE 30 in.Profile JGP940 Gas Cooktop

Gas leak within cooktop

My jgp940 glass surface cooktop seems to leak from within, wether in use of not.
I have to fix it myself as we are 1200 miles from a dealer or any type of expert.
Problem is I cant see how to get access inside the cooktop, and don't want to break the glass upper trying.
Once inside I'm sure I can fix the leak.

    Thanks for the detailed directions.
In answer to your question, it seems to leak gas.
To make sure I capped off the pipe to it, right at the flare.
    The smell stopped.

What do you mean it has a leak inside? You can remove the glass top by carefully lifting it up and out of the countertop and the removing either the phillips, 1/4" or Torx screws around the lip under the glass. Pull off the knobs and the glass will s-l-o-w-l-y come up with even steady lifting force. Where gloves in case it breaks but it shouldn't as long as you don't drop in on a corner

Pull the cooktop up and out after reconnecting the gas. Then spay a soap solution on every joint, connection, and gas valve bodies and stems and look for bubbles. When you find the bubbles you have found the leak and then will know what action you need to take. It could also be under the top where the regulator connects. Soap down everything! Remember natural gas is lighter than air so it will rise above where it is actually coming from. Look for any connection that the installer used pipe dope on. Those are nortorious for leaking. Seal pipe thred connectors with yellow teflon tape. Make sure it's yellow not white tape. White is for air and water not combustible gases.

I have a GE model jgp940 gas cooktop one of the four burner electrodes will not spark.

You have to determine if it is the electrode or the ignitor module and replace the component. A simple test is to swap the wires on the spark module for the non working one and see if the other electrode still works. If not the electrode is bad, if it does than the module is bad.

Porcelain grate scratched or stained?

If you keep using the range without the aluminum pans it will eventually go away, but aluminum will leave marks on the surface of the grate.

I can not separate the glass cooktop from the granite surface.

alot of installers will use a silicone glue to "seal" the unit to the countertop. what happens is that means you cant get it out without cutting the glue off first.
it could also be that the unit is very tight in the countertop.
also did you remove the "hold down" screws from underneath the unit first??? there should be a screw on each side below the unit.

one more thing... do you have a gas line under your counter? if not be sure you can get a gas line to it before you try to remove the old unit. most homes have a finished ceiling under the kitchen and it would be almost impossible to install a new gas line if its not already there.

Glass top

The cooktop will need to be removed from the counter. Turn it upside down and remove the screws. The biggest problem will be removing the cooktop from the counter. Sometimes it is not worth fixing as the part could cost around $400. NEVER use a cracked top as it could suddenly explode. This is tempered glass and very unstable if cracked or chipped.
