Question about Emerson Smartset Clock Radio

Wrong time My clock is 11 minutes fast compared to an "Atomic Clock' next to it and all other clocks in the house, settable or automatic. Can you help?

    When I bought my Emerson clock radio home yesterday and plugged it in, its clock was 3 minutes off from my PC's clock, which is set from the atomic clock. I have no idea why it would be different. My workaround is to just set the Emerson's clock to match the atomic clock. This new, corrected time is what gets restored if the Emerson ever suffers from a power failure, and I'm happy with that.

    Short of some kind of firmware upgrade, I don't see how there would be any solution to this.

This is a problem with either the a/c power or the Clock/Radio's internal timing crystal circuitry. The radio depends on the 60 cycle power source as the timing device. If this power is irregular or uneven in its delivery it can cause the timing circuits to lose or gain time. The Clock/Radio has a frequency tuned crystal that operates like the second hand on a clock. When the calibration for whatever reason is lost the crystal will not be able to perform the timing function correctly. The reason this does not happen in all Clock/Radios is that they usually have correction circuits. These circuits keep the crystal from drifting out of calibration during operation. Because of the low production cost of these Clock/Radios, the quality control is almost non existent. The components are variable and sometimes they do not stay within specifications. This problem is usually handled by quality control departments in the manufacturers facilities. They usually test a certain amount of the production run to make sure it meets specification. In higher priced electronics these test are on going during the production run. In lower cost electronics these tests for quality control are usually done before the production run. This is to choose the best and most reliable components for the price level of the product in production. What this means to you, is that the quality of the components and quality control of the production runs are based on cost efficiency to the manufacturer. How can I set the time?


Once you select the time zone and whether you are observing DST, the clock sets automatically. That's the point of having an atomic clock.

How do you set an atomic clock


You're not supposed to set the time -- it's supposed to synchronize with the US atomic clock broadcast automatically. Perhaps putting it in a different area of the house, or turning it to a different orientation will help it make the initial connection.
If it still won't, here are instructions from one of the LaCrosse models... use them or go to http://www.lacrossetechnology.com/clocks/atomic-digital/wall/
and find your particular clock, then download the instructions.

MANUAL TIME SETTING
In case the atomic clock is not able to detect the WWVB-signal (disturbances, transmitting distance, etc.), the time can be manually set. The clock will then work as a normal Quartz clock. Note: In 12 hours mode the time will be displayed with an additional "PM" for the time from 12:00 noon until 11:59.
1. The hour digits will start flashing on LCD1.
2. Set the desired hours by pressing and releasing the + key followed by pressing the SET key.
3. Now the minute digits will start flashing.
4. Set the desired minutes by pressing and releasing the + key . If the + key is held, the units will increase by 5.
5. Press and release the SET key to move to the "Year Setting".
Note:
The unit will still try and receive the signal every day despite it being manually set. When it does receive the signal, it will change the manually set time into the received time. During reception attempts the WWVB tower icon will flash. If reception has been unsuccessful, then the WWVB tower icon will not appear but reception will still be attempted the next hour.
WWVB reception occurs daily at 12:00 am and 06:00 am. If the reception is not successful at 12:00 am, then the next reception takes place the next hour and so on until 06:00am, or until the reception is successful. If the reception is not successful at 06:00 am, then the next attempt will take place the next day at 12:00 am.
The other times WWVB reception takes place are upon setup and after manual time set exiting mode. Reception is generally not possible during daylight hours due to the interference of the sun.

Sony IFC-218 clock radio runs 8-9 minutes fast


Hold the 'Clock' button until the display flashes. It will first show the year, next press on 'Clock' with show the month, then the day, then the time. Use + and - to set your time and press 'Clock' again.

Don't expect this clock to set the time by itself. It is not an atomic clock.

    Every atomic clock in my house shows a different time!


    They all receive the same signal, but it sounds like you're in an area where the signal can't get through. Check to see if your clocks have an icon that indicates signal reception (most do). If your clocks cannot lock onto the signal you may need to place them outside for a few minutes every few months.

    Remote that gives outside temp does not work put in new batteries, still does not work!


    Pull the batteries out of the clock, wait a minute, and then put them back in. That will reset the link between the two. The temperature should be OK in just a few minutes. The clock will read the wrong time and date until it resets during the night. The next day, all will be well.

Therefore, the next signal attempt will take place between 12:00 am and 6:00 am the next day. The other times WWVB reception takes place, are upon setup and after manual time set exiting mode. Reception is generally not possible during daylight hours due to the interference of the sun.
