I've just installed above dvd writer with bundled nero esentials7. I was able to install a new program via dvd writer (reason for purchase), however, when I attempt to play a known DVD, I am able to only see the video portion without soundtrack. Can you help?

Re: new hp dvd writer... no sound from dvd's
First double click on speaker image in right corner of your screen to see if you have MUTE disabled for all the devices and you have audio drivers to have speaker activated. Second, if you recently istalled new dvd driver it can be hardware problem. There are audio plugs (analog and digital) on back of DVD-Burner. Check if they are connected properly. Third your DVD-playback software might not supporting audio, so you might be missing audio codecs to playback DVD-audio. It depends which program you using. Maybe you need to download another program to playback DVD, for instance Windows Media Player 11.

Hello sir ! Go to the my computer right click on the the dvd drive then there's an option to erase if it's DVD-RW click on that option, it will erase it Another method is to install a nero cd/dvd burner into your computer then instert DVD-RW into your DVD ROM then open the program Nero and erase the DVD using that.
try cleaning up the system. Defragmentation in safe mode will probably help too (i've seen high fragmentation over 10% really mess a system up to where it will not even complete a basic burn). Get rid of the resource hog called Norton- go get AVG free edition- YES IT IS COMPLETELY FREE! also- try using Nero burning software- if it works for you you can buy it but they give you a free version on their website that works GREAT for everything and can test to tell you what the problem burning is (it has dignostic tools in it.) if you are still unable to get it working- e-mail for further support options good luck!
According to your Service Tag, your machine was shipped with an 8X DVD -ROM & 24X CD/RW Combo Drive, so yes you will need to purchase a DVDRW drive. There is a single layer burner that 4.7GB, and a dual layer model for 8.5GB. They can be purchased from Dell directly, or eBay, Amazon etc (same drive fits D630, D830 etc) and there is a rectangular button on the lower right hand side of the drive that you press in, to pull out the existing CDRW, and simply slide the new drive in. You will need a Burning software like Roxio or Nero to burn DVD's onto the new drive.
It's the **** DVD playing software that came with the drive, and it's codecs. Download and Use a free program called VLC media player. I've been dealing with this myself for a month now and this was the solution.
do you have a burning software installed? you can download nero express @ majorgeeks.com
you mention that your friend gave it to you? was it working fine before? its easy to set up your new dvd writer whenever you have already installed a burning software like nero. well, you can also try clone dvd. it works very well too.
and also check for firmware upgrades for your dvd writer...you can find it here...
depending on what the file you have theres several ways .You didn't say whether you want to copy or make a dvd movie so i'll give you a few ideas get nero once installed then you need a dvd writer-not a dvd rom the rom will only read and the write will write then get some dvd r+ or dvd rw + insert if you want to burn a file from your pc like a dvd movie which is in dvd format, not an avi file from a torrent site but a dvd rip then place a new dvd in your burner select nero and tell it to burn the dvd with the options for dvd if you want to copy a dvd use nero's options to copy there are other programs you can use it's all up to you
