You heard right! Every 6 months you should treat the water in your waterbed with a special conditioner. This conditioner may come with the kit you get when you buy your bed; if not you can purchase some separately.

What is a waterbed?

Waterbed is a bed or mattress filled with water. Waterbeds tend to sag under your body's heavier parts. Many people find waterbeds very comfortable and wont sleep on anything else. Just remember, before you buy one, sleep on someone else's to see if it is right for you.

Waterbed care & maintenance

Waterbed mattresses require very little maintenance. There are a few basic steps you can follow to help lengthen the lifespan of your waterbed mattress: the periodic addition of waterbed conditioner and proper water level maintenance.

Adding conditioner to your waterbed will help prevent the water from becoming motionless. If you fail to do this, the water will become stagnant and develop a pungent smell. Failure to add conditioner will also result in an accelerated deterioration of your waterbed mattress. Once every year and a half all you need to do is add 8oz of specialized waterbed conditioner to the water inside your mattress.

Maintaining a certain water level is an extremely crucial part of waterbed care. Overfilling/under filling your mattress can result in damage. Too much water can cause the vinyl to stretch while too little water could be damaging to the heater.

Unlike other mattresses, waterbed mattresses are much easier to clean. Simply wipe down the surface once a month with a vinyl cleaner and a damp cloth. This will clean off all dirt and dust mites that have accumulated over the past month.

I suffer from allergies and have heard that it may help to sleep on a waterbed. Is there any truth to this statement?

There is truth to this. Doctors say that waterbeds can be very beneficial for people suffering from allergies. Reason being, waterbeds are made of vinyl, leaving no fibers for dirt and dust debris to settle. Simply put, you have eliminated dust mites and other bed bug issues.

I heard that waterbeds can hold up to 200 gallons of water. Can my floor support this weight?

First of all, some waterbeds can hold even more than 200 gallons of water. As for the floor beneath you, it will be fine. Waterbeds actually consume less weight per square foot than a refrigerator/washing machine. If you are still concerned though, there are two types of waterbeds that weigh between 40-70% less than the traditional waterbeds. The more "light-weight" waterbeds are known as Deep filled softside and shallow filled softside waterbeds.
