There is a how, and a why, but first, let's start with the how. Portable TV's have LCD, (Liquid Crystal Display) Screens. But the Screen is merely a vivid illusion created by the rapidly moving electrons flowing through the crystals themselves causing color contrast ratios to shift so fast, hence creating the image. And now the why: the TV uses a back illumination to light up behind the screen. That is why the screen goes black. Normally in LCD's, there are CCFL, (Cold Cathod Floruscent Lighting), these are tiny lamps that should be replace easily. google replacement model for your TV, and aslo type model # plus ccfl lamp. :)
Your tv power supply is over heating and that is why it shuts down. Think of a hair dryer that shuts off after over heating. It is a safety feature. Depending on the age, it is most likely a 100 lb paper weight. Find a place that takes broken tv's and get a new lcd.
Check all the filters for dust and fur. This sounds like an overheat problem, and the easiest way of preventing damage is to remove the heat source, so the projector turns the Lamp Off. Also clarify that the fans are turning when the unit is powered up.
I would begin by checking the fuse for the socket you have this device plugged into. Whenever possible, all accessories should be unplugged and the radio should be turned off before you disconnect the battery. good luck.
