Shift Keys not working properly on ACER notebook

Not sure if the problem im having is a hardware problem so here go's.

I have a ACER TravelMate 4050 notebook (WinXP), about 2 weeks ago I started having some strang problem with my 2 "Shift" keys, it works but it does not work properly. The left "Shift" key only works on a random set of keys (first half of keyboard) and the right "Shift" key only works with anther random set of keys (second half of keyboard) eg.

Key's that work on left "Shift"

Key's that work on right "Shift"
TYGHZXCVBNM As u can see the ASDFJKL keys does not work at all. the only way for me to insert a Caps letter is by useing the Caps Lock and all other keys works fine. Here is another example, neither one of my shift keys work when trying to insert a colon (:), I have to hold in both shift keys at the same time to be able to insert a colon (:)

I resontly formated and reinstall XP and ja gues what I'm still having the same strange problem.

PLEASE assist

i have the exact same problem and have been searching for a solution for weeks. i don't think this is a hardware problem, rather it seems to be a problem related to the driver. my keys that aren't working are the same as the above. there must be a solution for this, somewhere.

Were any changes made to your computer just prior to the problem occuring? Was there any software or hardware recently installed?

The 8042 keyboard controller has been integrated into one chip with other I/O functions so I doubt you can replace it as a single IC and I'm afraid that is what has failed. It is an extremely rare failure but I guess it has to happen some time. The keyboard is kind of a polled matrix so it only takes the failure of a single line to bollix things up.
I think what you are talking about here is a motherboard exchange or repair.

I have fractions on my keyboard, how do i get them on my screen?

It's either a Shift+ the key with the character you want to print or an FN(The Fn Key)+ the key that has the character you want to print. This assumes your drivers for that keyboard are actually loaded in the OS you are using and the OS recognizes the special keys. These are not normal keys.

Trying to toggle from blue keys to white keys

You have to hold the shift key down and then hit the question mark key.

In the picture above the key is white but most of them are black. There are 2 shift keys at either ends of the keyboard with the trade mark up arrows on them.

Shift key not working

You have 2 Shift keys on the keyboard. If the other shift key is working then the shift key that is not working is defective. You should consider replacing the keyboard on your laptop. There is no setting on Windows that can disable the shift key.

**Note : If both Shift keys are not working, Try to check if sticky keys feature on windows is on. Sticky keys should be disabled. To disable sticky keys, Click on start and Go into control panel > Accessibility Options, and under keyboard there is sticky keys. Remove the tick and click apply and OK.

**If "Use Sticky Keys" is unchecked, that means sticky keys is disabled.

That means that you turned on the numlock on the laptop keyboard, On an acer if im not mistaken you have to press one of the function keys to deactivate it. Look for the icon with NUM on it and press it. if that does not work you may have to press FN then that icon.

Keyboard stuck in upper case

Is the caps lock light illuminated? If so, you might have to hold shift and hit caps lock to turn off the caps lock. This is an option for old typists who came from manual typewriters that you might have turned on by mistake.
