Question about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console
Hi,when i turn ps3 on the console freezes up with multicoloured lines across the screen,im unable to do anything then and cannot acces xmb screen.ive tryed holding down reset button and tryed the original scart output but still the same from both scart and hdmi.i left the console off for the night and tryed again in the morning and i got into a game then after 5 mins it froze up again,,,,then same thing again now unable to get back to xmb,,,any help would be much appreciated
Turn off the PS3 with the switch on the back, then turn back on. wait till the light is solid red then hold your finger on the start button for abount 10 seconds until you hear it beep twice.
It will then ask you to connect a controller via the usb cable and press the PS button. Once you do this it will bring up the reset menu.
Unfortunately the only way I found that solves this is a full system restore that wipes the hard drive completely.
You do however retain and data saved online such as COD stats etc and playstation store purchases with your PSN.
Hope this helps??

I tried that method before, the whole system restore and all. I thought that it would work...but those pesky green pixels filled the screen and brought the freeze along with it. then my ps3 would not start up at all, i tried multiple time to start it, and nothing happened...just a black screen.
I left it alone for two days and tried turning it on, it started right up, i played bionic commando for about 20mins and then turned it off just in case... i played the same game the very next day (bionic commando-the remake) and maybe 10mins into the game, it freezed again. i just turned it off.
I called power gamer and told them about my problem, gave them my ps3's symptoms and they suspect at cpu, or gpu issue... it cant be fixed, Im going to have to buy a new one.
in other words when something like this happens, something is getting very hot inside of our system. overheating and shorts. Im going to backup all of my data that's on my faulty ps3 and buy a new one, and then transfer the data to the new one.... sucks...but hey i had my ps3 for a while now.

Your hard drive may be messed up.
I suggest getting someone to look at it or get a new one.
hope this helps

I am having issues with mine same as most above.
I would like to try and reformat/restore settings but it freezes before i can even get the settings page.
Some times the tv doesn't even recognise that there is anything plugged in.
When i leave it for a while it loads up normally but then freezes.
with colourful pixels all over the screen.
Taken it apart, cleaned it still nothing.
i have fixed YLOD on it twice would this have caused something else to break?
it has worked since the last YLOD fix but its b*g*rd up now.
Any one got any solutions as to how to reformat hard drive if you cant turn the ps3 on?

I am having a similar problem except instead of lines i get small coloerful dots across a blank screen. I've tried the restore file systems. but that didnt work. I called sony and they basically couldnt help me. They told me the only way to fix it is to format the system. But I would really hate to lose everything. is there any other way to solve this problem. I am able to hear the sounds of the ps3 starting but it will not dipsly anything other than the blank screen and dots. PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Actually the most likely culprate I found was dust in the system. Some people fixed this with the fanning method (turn ps3 upside down verticaly for awhile), but mine still didn't work. IT's something you could try though.

a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

listen just hold down the button, i'm not sure how long like you hear 2 beeps then 3 or something and it will take you to a screen with 6 or so options - choose restore file system, you shouldn't loose data if your lucky, anyway i had a very similar problem and my ps3 sat for a year before i was smart enough to figure this one.
