I have simuliar problems. I believe its the hard drive, unfortunately.
as i boot my system up, it says rebuilding hard drive. the system been freezing up repeatably. I may have accidentally turned the system off while the HDD light was flashing, which corrupted the hard drive.

I have a 60 gb ps3 which I got last Christmas.  It worked fine, and then I was playing cod4 when the same thing happened to me.  I turned it off and played it again in the morning and 5 minutes into the game it froze.

I have the exact same problem. I was updateing it and it froze during the update so unfortunately i shut it down with the main power switch and the next time i turned it on it did it again. i havnt had any luck figuring it out. I tried to re-format it (quick) but that didnt do anything.

The same thing is happening to me, i was playing a game and the console froze, all appears now is the swirly line, left it for a few days and tried it again, still nothing, the menu has disappeared

I've format hard drive, change to a brand new hard drive, and restore PS3 system, etc. and nothing worked.

I have this same problem but rather than colored lines i get little colored dots everywhere on my screen. It has slowly became worse. i have a 20 gb so i just figured it was getting old but really for the price that they were they should be good for longer than a couple of years or at least i think they should be.

Solved :) PS3 shop said damaged processor and i should give up but the solution is: 1- Go to any computer that has maintenance department. Ask for thermal paste (looks like white paste) it is also called (Cooler component) it is very cheap ( 5 LE here in Egypt) injection like. Buy 2 is more than enough. 2- Disassemble your PS3 (you have to know what to do) tell you reach 2 metal silver squares (i think it is the processors) on the mother board right before you reach the ventilation fan. (you could watch youtube under title fixing overheating PS3) 3- Remove the old coating thermal paste (mostly you will find it black like burned) by napkin and any pc cleaning liquid till it is all removed. 4- Some video suggests to heat that 2 squares with special heating gun so i did it in case but i used the hair dryer. I am not sure if this step is helping or not but i did it in case. It is heating the squares and push lightly on it in case some of the connection was loose a little, it gets back in the place. Wait till it cool down for around 15 minutes. 5- Start to spread the new thermal paste you bought it equally on those 2 squares and do not splash on the rest of mother board around (clean it if you do). Spread using plastic credit card like. 6- You are done. Reassemble the PS3 and turn it on and go along with the messages will appear and enjoy. I have been playing for an hour and it is fine.

Turn off the PS3 with the switch on the back, then turn back on. wait till the light is solid red then hold your finger on the start button for abount 10 seconds until you hear it beep twice.

It will then ask you to connect a controller via the usb cable and press the PS button. Once you do this it will bring up the reset menu.

Unfortunately the only way I found that solves this is a full system restore that wipes the hard drive completely.

You do however retain and data saved online such as COD stats etc and playstation store purchases with your PSN.

Hope this helps??

I tried that method before, the whole system restore and all. I thought that it would work...but those pesky green pixels filled the screen and brought the freeze along with it. then my ps3 would not start up at all, i tried multiple time to start it, and nothing happened...just a black screen.

I left it alone for two days and tried turning it on, it started right up, i played bionic commando for about 20mins and then turned it off just in case... i played the same game the very next day (bionic commando-the remake) and maybe 10mins into the game, it freezed again. i just turned it off.

I called power gamer and told them about my problem, gave them my ps3's symptoms and they suspect at cpu, or gpu issue... it cant be fixed, Im going to have to buy a new one.

in other words when something like this happens, something is getting very hot inside of our system. overheating and shorts. Im going to backup all of my data that's on my faulty ps3 and buy a new one, and then transfer the data to the new one.... sucks...but hey i had my ps3 for a while now.

I am having issues with mine same as most above.
I would like to try and reformat/restore settings but it freezes before i can even get the settings page.
Some times the tv doesn't even recognise that there is anything plugged in.
When i leave it for a while it loads up normally but then freezes.
with colourful pixels all over the screen.

Taken it apart, cleaned it still nothing.
i have fixed YLOD on it twice would this have caused something else to break?
it has worked since the last YLOD fix but its b*g*rd up now.

Any one got any solutions as to how to reformat hard drive if you cant turn the ps3 on?

I really couldnt figure out what the issue was. Luckily my friend had an broken playstation as well. His issue was a broken disc drive. So i took the two apart swapped over the drive. So unfortunately i only managed to fix his playstation and not mine, but as he already had a new one i got a working playstation out of it. Sorry this isnt really any help as to how to fix it.

I am having a similar problem except instead of lines i get small coloerful dots across a blank screen. I've tried the restore file systems. but that didnt work. I called sony and they basically couldnt help me. They told me the only way to fix it is to format the system. But I would really hate to lose everything. is there any other way to solve this problem. I am able to hear the sounds of the ps3 starting but it will not dipsly anything other than the blank screen and dots. PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Actually the most likely culprate I found was dust in the system. Some people fixed this with the fanning method (turn ps3 upside down verticaly for awhile), but mine still didn't work. IT's something you could try though.

SOURCE: hi,when i turn ps3 on the console freezes up with

listen just hold down the button, i'm not sure how long like you hear 2 beeps then 3 or something and it will take you to a screen with 6 or so options - choose restore file system, you shouldn't loose data if your lucky, anyway i had a very similar problem and my ps3 sat for a year before i was smart enough to figure this one.

When I try to play my ps3 it will freeze up and show these red and green lines on my tv

This is a GPU chip problem, it has a bad connection to the motherboard, that can cause YLOD, no picture, freezing, pixilation, no hard drive activity, no synchronization with the controller through the USB cable , colors get missed up , see lines and different forms of pixels on the screen then it freezes, all these symptoms indicate a bad connection between the GPU chip and the motherboard, there is only one real solution , Reballing the GPU chip , PS3 GPU chip is a very sensitive chip due to the fact that it has a built in memory chips so you need a very reputable place to do that procedure for your console , the photo story you see is an example of the reason and the solution and the link is for the place to fix it for you and give you a one year warranty on the repair.

Game freezes and dots appear on screen

I hate to break it to you, but you may have gotten the Red Ring Of Death. It happens when playing a game and it is transmitted through online play through Xbox Live. 3 red lights will appear around the power button when your console has become infected. The Red Ring of Death may have infected your console causing it to shut down. Most Xbox 360 consoles won't turn back on but some do turn back on but they just won't play games, they will freeze up and have the dotted lines and make the buzzing noise. I'm sorry, but I think you may need a new console. You're in luck if it's still under warranty. Hope this helps!!!!
