Almost from the beginning I have noticed a very bad smell from the washer. After spin cycles, patches of brownish gunk are deposited around the top of the tub. It seems like the washer isn't draining completely and the dirty washer hides inside. It's not just the patches of gunk, it's the smell. What's worse is that I have to use scent-free detergent. So my clothes come out smelling worse than when they went in. I've tried leaving the top open and running bleach/water through a cycle, but these don't seem to help. Is there anything I can do other than throwing out the washer? Thanks.
Hello barbaracrowl,
From your description, it sounds like the drain system is running back into your washer and you are getting dirty water back into it which in turn causes a build up of mold etc.. I would evaluate the drain system first to make sure you have a water trap and no restrictions that would cause backflow. I would also cycle it on the hottest setting and use a cup or two of white vinegar in lieu of detergent. You may also consider wiping down all surfaces that have that gunk buildup with white vinegar too. When complete.. try cycling an empty washer and open it to periodically examine the water itself for any residue or scum.. To eliminate any backflow after all these cycles are run, you could drain it into a nearby sink or shower stall or rubber barrel just to make sure you aren't getting any backstreaming dirty water. Let me know how it works out or what you find and if my suggestions don't help.. I have a few other ideas that may help you.. BTW: use the lowest wash load setting for all tests and the hottest..
Regards and Good Luck,
Rick
