    no lights checked the switch ribbon pins with ohmeter too because it looked awful crimped but it is good. This notebook was my brother's and he gave it to me non-functioning. I would like to try and fix it without sinking too much into it. Any idea where i can get a print for this board?

    Honestly, i have had a good amount of success finding laptops on ebay that didnt have hard drives, memory, all that stuff and were really cheap. If you can get one of those then youll also have a backup screen and all kinds of other stuff. Just to beabsolutly sure I would remove anythiing i could from the system, memory, hardrive, anything that is easily removed, so you have nothing but a core system, have it plugged in and try to power it up. Being that it doesnt power up now, i doubt it will with all the other stuff removed, the onyl reason id do it is to be sure that it isnt something else. May seem excessive but you never know, also check the power supply, make sure you are getting out of it what it says, If you have a multimeter check the dc voltage from it, also check and make sure there isnt any AC coming from it as this will prevent the laptop from coming on. If you are getting out of the supply what the label says then we know for sure its the board, give me the make and model, and ill start searching for a decent barebones system you can use for parts.

It's either the adapter connection or the MOBO itself.
Anyhow try removing the battery and adapter press and hold the power button for 10 to 20 sec plug the adapter with out the battery and restart. Hope this works if not check the MOBO for jack problem
if battery is already charged try with battery alone. Also be sure adapter is compatible the right voltage IE 19.00, 18.00

Gateway nv52 won't charge

It sounds like you either have a dead mother board or a bad power inlet. Did the machine work with the new battery while it was charged? If so, then the battery connector was good and the inlet was bad. If not, your motherboard could be dead. I've also seen where a bad battery connector would syphon off enough power to not power on the machine or charge the battery.

I think your DC Power Jack is bad. The DC Power Jack is where the power cord plugs into the laptop. If it is bad, then a good power cord cannot charge the battery, nor can the laptop turn on once the battery is drained.

You say it smelled burnt, that might mean it took a power surge. I always tell people that before your plug the power cord into the electrical outlet on the wall to remove the other end of the cord from the laptop. That way if you get a power surge you will only damage the power cord and not the dc power jack or motherboard.

Anyway, take an ink pen and push it into the dc power jack and see if there is some movement. The little pin or the casing of the jack should not wiggle.

The DC Jack is soldered onto the motherboard. To replace it you will have to take the laptop apart, desolder the old dc jack and solder a new jack onto the board. Sometimes the DC Jack sits in a slot rather than being soldered. The palmrest and bottom case helps to keep it in place. This type of DC Jack usually has a cable harness that plugs into the motherboard.

Hi,

There's a lot of causes why this has happened in your laptop. Here are some possible causes and solutions to this problem:

Since you bought a new laptop battery, probably it is good and your AC power adapter also, because you said that the power cord light remains on. I think what you mean for the power cord is that it is the AC power adapter.

First, try to power up your laptop through the new laptop battery that you recently bought if you believe it is holding a charge and make sure you don't plug in the AC power adapter into your laptop. But before you turn on the laptop, make sure that the contacts between your laptop battery and your laptop motherboard is making a good connection. Because sometimes it will not, maybe something spilled in there or there's some dust covering the contacts or some sort of dirt and they're not making a clean connection. To be sure that this is not happening to the contacts or your laptop battery and the motherboard of your laptop, pull the battery out, take a toothbrush and just scrub in between the pins of the battery there and also scrub down the the pins where the motherboard connection is (which is the contacts between the battery and your laptop motherboard, where you install the battery). If you are done doing this, put the battery in and turn the laptop on.

If the steps above doesn't solve your problem, try this one:

* Pull the battery out
* Remove main supply
* Hold power button down for 30 seconds. This will drain the charges in your battery.
* Put only power supply in
* Do not put battery in
* Turn laptop on
* Put the battery in

If you're done doing the steps above and did not solve your problem you can try the steps below:

You have to test if there's a fix voltage on your AC power adapter by using a voltmeter, usually 18 to 19V DC depending on the registered voltage written on your AC power adapter. If there is, kinda bend or jiggle the power cord a little bit to make sure the connections is tight. If the voltage remains steady, then probably your AC power adapter is good. Now we have come to the point that we need to deal with your laptop motherboard. There's a lot of reasons why your laptop won't power on even if you have a good laptop battery and AC power adapter. Maybe your laptop motherboard is partially bad, like for example if the dc jack on your laptop is bad and is not making a connection to the motherboard then it might look like the battery is bad as well because the battery is now now holding a charge or even taking a charge. Now this has happened a lot to plenty of laptop owners where their dc jack goes bad. They think their batteries gone bad because is not taking a charge anymore, they got and buy a new battery and then decide to bring their laptop to a laptop repair company because of the battery's not charging even with the new battery, that's because the dc jack is bad. You're going to probably right into this a lot where the battery's not charging because the dc jack is bad and until you fixed that, the battery's never going to charged. So how do you test if your dc jack is bad? It's simple, plug in the AC power adapter, take the battery out of the computer. If the computer doesn't power on then you know you have a problem with the dc jack. The only way to solve this, is that you have to disassemble your laptop, start taking components out one by one and finally, take the laptop motherboard out. Afte you've taken the motherboard out, look where the dc jack is connected. After you will find it, take a file tool and file off a spot on the motherboard where you can reattach the power jack and use a wire to reattach the power jack to the motherboard.

Hope you will find this answer helpful. God bless

Chances are the power jack in the laptop that is to blame. It's common for the solder connections holding the jack to the motherboard to break because of the power plug flexing. One way to check is to keep the laptop steady and wiggle the power plug. If the power indicator flickers, that's what's wrong.

The good news is that this is usually repairable. The bad news is that not all service shops are willing to get into this level of repair. The motherboard needs to be removed from the computer so the connections can be repaired. Sometimes the board needs some mechanical repair as well, and occasionally the only way to fix the trouble is to replace the board. Most shops want to replace the motherboard right off.

Call around to shops in your area and see who's willing to try soldering the board. That is usually all that's needed to get you going again.

You probaly have a broken DC JACK on the motherboard. Therefore, regardless if you have a good power adapter. The power is not making a connetion to the battery because the DC JACK throught which the power flows is broken.

Try another adapter and remove the battery. If the computer is powered up using the new adapter then the old adapter is bad and the DC JACK is good. Replace the battery and if the batter charges, you can identify the old power adapter as the culprit. If the batter does not charge but the laptop powered on. Then both the battery and the charger is faulty-battery not holding charge.

Good luck

Dell xps m1210 won't power up with new battery. Check notes.

If it is working fine with a fresh battery then it is not a motherboard problem. It is either a bad ac adapter jack on the motherboard or the actual ac adapter cord is not working. Try cables2go.com as they have replacement ac adapters for almost everything under the sun. Hope this helps.

Power issues or maybe motherboard going out?

Hi there,
yes, I do that repair all the time. The key is to cleaning off all the old solder. The old solder can cause a bad connection. You need to get some solder wick, and some denatured alcohol. The wick will soak up the old solder.

Clean off the posts of the jack, and the circuit board from solder and flux, and use the denatured alcohol.

I know it is a pain in the **** to disassemble and reassemble, but it will be worth the time, and make is work right.

When you go to solder it back on, make sure you do not put too much or too little solder. A good shiny little bump on each one. If you have a good magnifyer, check out your joints before you assemble it all back together.

Good luck, and hollar if you need anything else on this.
