ZI suggest you have the engine thermostat replaced, it is likely sticking open and allowing the engine to cool down. The thermostat is under the cover that the upper radiator hose connects to on most GM engines.

SOURCE: Would like to talk with a car repair guru, not a computer guru

i think you have a combonation of problems here. most of it lead to needing a tune up .
just to get an understanding what is going on in your engine . i would bet to say that your enagine light is on . and probily an engine misfire code.
when the engine misfires somtimes it wil activate your knock sensor and ****** the timing thus raising your engine temp. if you havent flushed your coolant system yet you should. new plugs and wires and clean your throttle body.
good luck

SOURCE: oil pressure guage dropping

Sounds like the sensor is failing.Have oil pressure checked with a mechanical gage to confirm. A new sensor or wiring repair is allot cheaper then a new engine!!

SOURCE: tempature gauge quiet working emission test said

The temperature sensor in located at the thermostat housing under the throttle body. You'll see two wires going in to the sensor, make sure the wires are not damaged and still connected. It's rear for the sensor to fail but it's an easy fix to replace it, just disconnect the wire harness and unscrew the sensor with a deep socket and replace with the new sensor in the reveres process. Good luck and hope this helps.

SOURCE: Tempature gauge shows all the way hot but not over

Your cooling system is low on water the hot rating is coming from the air in the system super heating and then the coolant circulates through bringing the temp reading back down.

My honda sounds like it needs to shift again and the heat gauge never raises

Could be a faulty thermostat or a faulty temp sensor.
As long as the computer sees the engine temp is cold it will restrict power to protect the engine.
You would need to know if the engine is getting up to normal temp.
The engine can be "cold" and still produce some heat thru the heater.

No heat and engine temp gauge is too high

no heat engine running hot sound like faulty thermostat which is sticking closed.if thermostat stuck closed no coolant can circulate through the engine block and radiator causing no heat condition and engine overheating.replace thermostat and radiator pressure or surge tank over jug cap see what happens.

My 1998 ford expidition temp rises suddenly then drops back to normal after a few seconds. what causes this?

Could be a few things, - low coolant - bad thermostat- thermostat installed wrong - bad tempature sensor - loose connection to sensor. wiring to gauge. look for the easyest things first.

My temp gauge reads only a quarter hot.when i tow a trailer or use my air my temp goes past half and my engine light comes on.

I would supect you actually have two problems going on here. First off it sounds like your guage is reading inaccuratly. When it is reading at one quarter it probably should be at the half way point. This is the normal operating range. The most likely cause is the temp sensor for the guage. When you pull a trailer and engine gets under a load the tempature sounds like its going up too high. Your engine light comes on because it uses a different sensor and is registering accurate tempature. I would start by comparing actual tempature of engine with what the guage reads, this can be done with a scanner or a heat gun pointed at the thermostat housing. I believe you will find a faulty sensor or possibly an outside chance of a bad guage.(but doubt it!)Once that is straightned out you will have to look at why is the engine getting too warm under load. I would start with radiator flow,A ristricted radiator either internally or externally will cause this. Good luck!

My temperature gage is going over in the red and my heat is not

Check the sensor which controls the cooling fans that cools the radiator it prevents the engine from over heating and allows the temp gauge to stay at normal range.recently had problems with my 2003 impala overheating it was the sensor had the thermostat replace as well.
