I have a Kenmore 110 20692 000 washing machine. Last week it stopped working, and wouldn't spin. It would go to that part of the cycle, but made a kind of grinding noise. I asked on fixya what the...

Normally that motor turns one direction for wash, and another direction for spin. Suggest you undo the coupling again and run the motor firstly in a wash mode. If all is well, forward dial to spin mode then watch if motor changes direction. If it doesnt, very possibly the timer is faulty. If it does change to the spin direction then your gearbox has a problem. Once the reverse direction comes into play, it is supposed to activate a series of gears in the gearbox which will engage the large drum into a spin direction. If there is a loud grinding noise then possibly a gearbox issue. email address is

The drum is not turning or spinning. The motor seems to be turning. Can't access the motor to see if it's a belt or shaft.

between the motor and transmission is a coupler with shear pins. get a new coupler and install to get this going again for the shear pins broke off for they get weak through the years. this can be done with the tub in place

How to determine if the motor coupler is malfunctioning? How do I know that the coupler is the problem? When I look at the coupler how do I determine if it is bad?

I am assuming this is a direct drive washer you are talking about. If the motor coupler is bad, it is either going to be broke in pieces, or, the centers that fit on the motor shaft and the transmission shaft will be "rounded" out. The center should be the same shape as the motor and transmission shaft and fit tight. If it is rounded and has play in it when on the shaft, it needs replaced. Older couplers where plastic in the centers, the replacment and newer couplers have a metal insert on the centers to prevent them from rounding out. If the coupler is your problem, it will not spin or aggitate, but you will hear the motor running. The machine WILL still drain with a bad coupler. If it wont spin OR drain, you probably have a bad lid switch.

My kenmore 80 washer spins just not enough to get as much water out as it should. not even 4 towels model 110-24872300. serial cr 10100 91 type 111

you may want to check, the motor coupler,
this is a three piece part, it sits between the transmission, and the motor and controls the speed
just by being in place..

Washing machine won't spin

Sounds like you a broken coupler. This is what makes the washer spin. You can check this by leaning the machine back and feeling for a rubber coupler between the motor and transmission. if this part wiggles or is missing replace it, its broke. Another sign of it being broke is rubber under the machine when you tilt it back.

Spin motor turns on, but drum does not spin

Okay, most recent model Kenmore top loaders have a DIRECT DRIVE transmission, which means it does not use a belt. If the model you have this listed under is correct, then the information below will shed some light on what may be wrong with your washer. Since the motor is turning as you stated, more than likely you have a motor coupling that has broken. The following link provides you with the steps necessary to replace one:

The motor coupling is located between the drive motor and gearcase (transmission). Some of the couplers that came from the manufacturer were made entirely out of plastic. Over a period of time, the center hole of the coupler (where it mounts to the motor shaft) would begin to wear and crack. Eventually, the coupler breaks. This is a common problem. A new improved coupler was manufactured to prevent frequent breakage and is more durable. At the bottom of the link is the part number you will need to order a new one. You can order on line at, or go to your nearest appliance parts retailer. This is a common part they should carry. The cost is about $15 or less.

I hope you find this information both helpful, and encouraging. If you have questions, or require additional assistance, please let me know.

Kenmore washer

It could possibly be a motor coupler that has broke. Its a small rubber disk mounted on plastic drive joints. Its located between the motor and the transmission. This coupler is made to rip or break in case of something more serious, sort of like protection for the motor or transmission. Jim

Kenmore Washer-coupling replaced-

Be sure that when you replaced the coupler, that you tapped on the rear (transmission) coupler. Take a long extension and a 9/16" socket and tap it until the shaft is flush with the inside of the coupler. Also, we have found that sometimes shaved rubber from the old coupler isnt rubbing or fell down in the area. Also, if you have it back out, be sure your new coupler doesnt show wear already. That would be an indication of a bad transmission, basket drive, or drum block.
