there is a factory setting reset in the menu,

The factory setting - return the nexstar hand control ot its original factory setting. Parameters such as backlash compensation values, initial date and time, longitude/latitude along with slew and filter limits will be reset. However, stored parameters such as PEC and user defined objects will remain saved even when factory settings is selected. The hand control will ask you to press O key before returning to the factory defaults settings

User manual and also firmware update for the handheld unit are available on this page

Reinstall the software completely.

If that does not work, it may be a cable problem.

If the motors can be manually powered, then the problem is probably the software installed on the computer, or at limit the connection cable.

To start unplug telescope and computer power and connection cables for ten minutes, this is called hard reset, and can solve problems caused by electrostatic charges by draining power completely from the devices. If the computer is a laptop, also remove laptop battery at same time.

After this, try doing a system restore to a recent date, chose a date before you started having the problem.

Here is how to do system restore on XP, on Vista the procedure is similar.

If system restore does not work, try reinstalling the software completely, using again the CD that came with the telescope.

At this point it should work, if it does not , test the telescope and software on a diffeent computer.

If it works , reinstall windows on first computer.

If it does not work, get a replacement connection cable.

Then it is not a computer, it is the Celestron sky scout you are talking about,.

You need to upgrade software/firmware on your sky scout, see:

How do I update my SkyScout software-firmware?

    and

I can’t successfully flash upgrade my SkyScout. What can I do?

You may also need to upgrade the motor control firmware, download is : Motor Control Firmware Updates v.2.1.21 (3.37 MB) release notes

If the firmware update operation gets interrupted , the control device may result damaged.

Better to contact celestron and find step by step instructions, and safety suggestions on how to do the firmware update before starting the update.

For some reason the screen keeps saying no response 16 and the motors don't work. can you tell me how to fix it

If nothing is broken--

1. Make sure your batteries are NEW and or you use a separate 12 volt power pack.

2. The hand controller does a motor test when it powers up.

Blank autostar screen, light but no message, bought new one same thing, buttons still do what they are suppose to,running blind help!

You do have batteries inside? I suppose. If you do the power panel light should be on (red)--- if it is the scope is powered up BUT THE CORD going to the hand controller is broken. Buy a new hand controller cord.

If the power light is NOT on then a circuit board is probably defective inside the scope base. Meade can repair this but you must send them the telescope.

First, always use a seperate 12 volt power pack and NOT the internal batteries. Do a Calibrate Motors -- first thing whenever you turn on the telescope.

Are the batteries FRESH? if they are you may have a bad motor. Contact Meade customer service:

It sounds like BAD batteries. Try new ones first before sending it to Meade.

Blank screen no screen output at all after a software upgrade

Did you update the 494 controller improperly with 497 controller firmware. You must use this updater software :

http://www.meade.com/support/auto/Au2ver59.exe

Hold down the ENTER key and the scroll down arrow key at the same time abd power on the scope. This will place the hand controller into the SAFE load function and you will be able to do another update.

If you plugged or unplugged the controller cable with the scope turned on you may have burned out the controller. Contact Meade:

ETX-125 Autostar controller not working

I assume the small red light on the power panel is ON. ???

If it is the scope is receiving power--- check to make sure the cable from the hand controller is plugged in properly-- jiggle the cable to see if you have a loose BAD cable. Before you panic --- try another cable or reverse the ends ---

Before you buy another hand controller try a new cable-- scopestuff.com sells a nice long flexible one for the 497 hand controller.

Hand controller not working

You have broken something inside the hand controller-- the computer is in the hand controller NOT in the telescope. Contact Celestron for a replacement hand controller or advice.
