Good Day,
That is quite an easy thing to do.
Immediately you turn on your PC, after displaying the brand (for some PC), the computer dispalys 'press F__ to enter boot setup'. If you can't get to read it, either press F2, F12, F10 or F1 continously after you turn on your system. Then you can make your corrections.
I hope this helps. Thank you for using Fixya.

SOURCE: my Dell optiplex 170L keeps turining off and then

Possible that it's caused by a faulty hardware or a computer virus on your computer. For us to isolate the issue we must start troubleshooting with the hardware

1. Remove all the connection at the back of your computer
2. Power cycle your computer tower by pressing the power button for 15 seconds
3. Plug the power cord back in and monitor cable at the back of your computer tower (if it turned on, meaning that one of the device plugged at the back of your computer is the one's causing the problem, for you to pin point the problem, try plugging it one-by-one and turn on the computer each time you plug a device)
4. If it keeps on doing that, open up your computer tower (be careful to unplug the power cord and power cycle it to avoid static electricity)
5. Reseat the video card, turn on the computer again, if it's still occurring
6. Reseat the IDE/Sata cable of your hard drive and try to make sure it's properly plugged in, turn on the computer again, if it's still occurring
7. Reseat the memory, turn on the computer and test it again if the same thing
8. If you have 2 memory chip inserted in your computer tower memory slot, remove the other one and turn on the computer, do the same thing to other memory and each slot
9. If all else fails, restart the computer and keep on pressing F8 before the window welcome screen comes up - to go to advanced boot options
10. Boot to Safemode
11. If you are able to boot to Safemode
12. Login as administrator
13. Click start
14. run
15. type msconfig then press enter
16. click on startup tab and click on disable all button at the bottom part
17. Restart the computer and let it start normally
18. if the same thing happen, boot to safemode again
19. Login to administrator again
20. Right click my computer
21. Click on properties
22. Click on Advanced Tab
23. Click on settings button under Startup and Failure
24. Uncheck the Automatically restart under System failure
25. Restart the computer in normal mode
26. Tell us if you see any blue screen error, if so, post the error here

if all else fail, your operating system needed to be reinstalled and you should have the cd for the operating system if it's XP or Vista or Windows 7.

SOURCE: I have a dell optiplex 170L and i can't get it to

You have contracted a virus that has corrupted your "userinit.exe" file. This is why it logs you out right away. Unfortunately, you are going to either need to get your hands on a Windows install CD or will have to slave your hard drive to another computer. Instructions on how to recover from the log out problem are contained near the bottom of the page at the link below...

Once you solve the problem, you will need to get yourself a good antivirus program and get that system cleaned, pronto...

No boot device available dell optiplex 170l series

Go to the bios to verify that the computer is recognizing the hard drive and that the hard drive is is listed in the boot sequence. If this is all good your hard drive may have been formatted or erased or the boot record is corrupt and unreadable to the bios. I had a similar problem. reloaded windows and all was good.

How to boot from a USB CD/DVD ROM MY System is Dell Optiplex 170L Thanking in advance

If you want to boot from a external cd/dvd rom here's what to do.
  1. Connect your USB CD/DVD ROM to your computer.
  2. After connecting, you must start from boot up. so Reboot your computer.
  3. You must go to your bios settings, so during boot, press DELETE or if it doesn't work reboot again and try F2.
  4. Now once on the bios settings, search for the boot device, or boot priority.
  5. You must make your USB CD/DVD ROM as First boot, or just place it at the top of the list.
  6. You can adjust the position by pressing (-)minus and (+)plus signs in your keyboard.
  7. Now once the USB CD/DVD ROM is at the top. press F10 to save the changes and click Yes.
  8. And that's it. Your PC will now boot from the USB CD/DVD ROM.
Goodluck, Hope my solution will help, Please give some feedback regarding my solution.

I have a dell optiplex gx 620 i install a new harddrive put the os cd in it said no boot device,i put in the dell boot cd it booted the computer up it got to A> prompt and stop loading what do i type in...

First put your Windows CD in the drive.

While booting, the screen should offer you a couple of choices - Enter "Setup" and tell you which keys to press or "Boot Options" and again which key to select.

Try Boot options first, and choose to boot from CD. It will revert next time you boot.

If you choose or have to enter "Setup" . Usually achieved by pressing the "Delete" or "F2" key look for and change your boot options to select you CD drive first but make sure you put it back later.

You may have to re-boot a couple of times to find the commands I mention, they do flash through fairly quickly.
