Question about Acer Aspire E380-UD420A (ASE380-UD420A) PC Desktop

1 Answer

RAM issues. Not getting the amount i have installed.

I am running 1.5 gb of pc 4200 RAM in an acer aspire E380. I installed a fourth stick of 512 today. To my surprise i booted to a memory dump, aka. Blue screen of death. I quickly removed power from the system and then removed the fourth stick. I booted a second time and had to let Vista run a repair due to the crash. After the check was run windows determined i had "errors" on my C: drive. I let chkdsk run its self on startup. I rolled back to a working date. Now here is where i am stumped. I can not get my back four USB ports to run my mouse, it will accept my usb keyboard, but not mouse. Also i have 1.5 gb of memory installed as i stated earlier. On boot acer has a widget setup that will tell you the amount of ram that is currently available. Since this blue screen, i can only access 128 mb of my total 1.5 gb installed. meaning it is only accepting one stick of 512. what happened to the other 2? I have spent all day looking and attempting to fix this issue, the more i try the more i get frustrated. i am ready to throw my pc out the window and start from scratch. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated, Thank you ,
Don.

Issue solved. I found that my thirs slot for my ram is completeley fried. Have no idea as to how it happened, it must be a default problem from the company. But i had to remove all the ram and hold my power button down for 30 seconds with the cord disconnected to reset. Of course acer was no help in this issue and wanted to charge for information, thanks to all those who post on forums. You saved my a bunch of money.

Acer desktp internal ram installation needed

I'm a bit confused....did you have all four of these in the ACER and are trying to put the 2x1GB into the Emachine? And that the 2x1 GB wouldn't work in the Emachine but they did in the ACER and that the 2x512 Acer cards worked in the emachine?

If that is what happened here is my best guess. The ACER MOBO will support 533/667/800 MHZ DDR2 RAM. The Emachine will only support 533 RAM. Iys possible the 2x1GB are either 667 or 800 MHZ and are not compatible with the Emachine but will work in the ACER.

Acer official site says:-
Up to 4 GB DDR2 533/667/800 MHz SDRAM
(dual-channel support on four DIMMs)

Try these bus speeds and for dual-channel support read this article :-

Dual-channel architecture requires a dual-channel-capable motherboard and two or more DDR, DDR2 SDRAM, or DDR3 SDRAM memory modules. The memory modules are installed into matching banks, which are usually color coded on the motherboard. These separate channels allow each memory module access to the memory controller, increasing throughput bandwidth. It is not required that identical modules be used, but this is often recommended for best dual-channel operation. It is possible to use a single-sided module of 512 MB and a double-sided module of 512 MB in dual-channel configuration, but how fast and stable it is depends on the memory controller.

If the motherboard has two pairs of differently colored DIMM sockets (the colors indicate which bank they belong to, bank 0 or bank 1), then one can place a matched pair of memory modules in bank 0, but a different-capacity pair of modules in bank 1, as long as they are of the same speed. Using this scheme, a pair of 1 GB memory modules in bank 0 and a pair of matched 512 MB modules in bank 1 would be acceptable for dual-channel operation.

Modules rated at different speeds can be run in dual-channel mode, although the motherboard will then run all memory modules at the speed of the slowest module. Some motherboards, however, have compatibility issues with certain brands or models of memory when attempting to use them in dual-channel mode. For this reason, it is generally advised to use identical pairs of memory modules, which is why most memory manufacturers now sell "kits" of matched-pair DIMMs. Several motherboard manufacturers only support configurations where a "matched pair" of modules are used. A matching pair needs to match in.

Good luck

I installed more ram, but how do i get pc to recognize it?

Your Bios should automatically detect it to make sure go to your desktop and right click on my computer-properties- General tab and that window should show you what is the current ram if is not finding it, you have to take it out and re install it until Bios finds it.

if it works for you, don't forget to rate me

I can't get my Acer aspire e380 to accept another

How many slots for RAM in the motherboard?

If there are 4 slots, are the slots equally-spaced, or are they located as two pairs of slots, with a gap between the 3rd and 4th slot?

Some computers _REQUIRE_ RAM only in the 1st and 3rd slots, or only in the 2nd and 4th slots.

Some computers "beep" when 3 out of the 4 RAM slots are populated.

Some computers require the size of the RAM in the 1st slot to match the size of the RAM in the 3rd slot,
and the size of the RAM in the 2nd slot to match the size of the RAM in the 4th slot.

Does your computer "beep" when one stick is in the first slot, and the other slots are empty? How much RAM on that stick?

Does your computer "beep" when one stick is in the second slot, and the other slots are empty? How much RAM on that stick?

Does your computer "beep" when one stick is in the third slot, and the other slots are empty? How much RAM on that stick?

Does your computer "beep" when one stick is in the fourth slot, and the other slots are empty? How much RAM on that stick?

Does your computer "beep" when one stick is in the first slot and a matching stick is in the third slot, and the other slots are empty? How much RAM on those sticks?

Upgrade problems

Your system comes stock with one stick of DDR2 (512 MB), which means that it is _ not_ dual channel DDR2 memory as dual channel DDR2 must be installed in matched pairs. Try to exchange the new memory for 2G of some single channel DDR2.

If you do not get the right memory for your computer it will not work. the memory you need is listed in the table below. And pay attention to the max amount of ram. Your system can only hold 2 gig and it comes with one gig installed

Acer Aspire E380 memory

Hi pimp69,
You can only use components compatible with Aspire series computers. Before you choose new components, please ask your authorized Acer dealer whether the part will operate within your Aspire series system. This is noted in your manual pg. 6.
Compatible memory for your Acer. Don't forget your Acer uses an intergrated graphics card that uses your system memory to function.
