Dell inspiron 4000 loose usb port

Can I solder the usb port on the motherboard? The usb port is so loose you need to wedge something into the side of it to make it stable and now it's only working periodically. Many thanks for your help. Sharon

Why don't my Dell 600m USB ports work?

Hello here is the homepage:

http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/04/Product/inspiron-600m

Look for any drivers missing, in the device manager.

You will probably need, the chipset driver, to make the usb port work.

You will also need service pack 1, to support the usb function.

Good luck

Can i upgrade my Dell 5150 pci to a gigabyte port? If so,is it hard to replace?

It is definitely possible to change the ports by soldering a new gigabit chip on the motherboard, but it is a serious task your board may lose its life if anything goes wrong...
on the other way you can use a serial to ethernet converter, if you have a serial port on your laptop....
there is no USB to gigabit converter available in the market (so need not search for one)...

My Dell Latitude XP laptop got knocked to the floor. It fell on the side where usb port was connected to printer. Usb port pins are now bent and port is unusable. Dell said I have to replace...

No, it's not the only way, if you have an unused PCMCIA port in your notebook. The width of the PCMCIA port is about the height of a credit-card, and the height of that port is about the thickness of a few credit-cards.

Purchase a PCMCIA adapter that has two or three USB ports.
Insert the PCMCIA adapter into the slot,
and connect your USB device to one of the USB ports.

My inspiron 4000 won't start up. i replaced cord; it was bad, and the battery wasn't holding any charge before it went into its two year sabbatical. Any solutions would be greatly appreciated.

1. Take the battery out of the laptop & try to turn on the laptop using power adapter only. If the computer turns on, then the battery is defective & needs to be replaced.
2. Make sure the power adapter is not defective. Test the output voltage of the power adapter using a voltmeter. Compare the voltmeter reading to the nominal value written on the adapter or the laptop.
3. Make sure the DC jack is not loose or broken. A loose DC jack will need to be re-soldered. A broken one will need to be replaced.
4. If you have another processor which is compatible with your laptop's model, try swapping processors & test to see if the laptop will work.
5. The power button could be bad.
6. The motherboard could be defective & needs to be replaced

Had dell motherboard replaced now the adapter for battery doesn't work or the usb ports on the left side. Can this be repaired

Hi there!

Yes that can be repaired!

Since you just got the motherboard replaced you can try
to update drivers, update the BIOS and the CHIPSET driver of your computer, these should fix that problem,
If not then there is something wrong with your motherboard.
You can download the latest BIOS and Chipset in support.dell.com

Hope these helps!

Usb ports loose and now wont work

Even taking a laptop apart (to board level) is tough, but you need to order the USB socket on ebay and solder the new one in carefully. Are you a qualified miniature soldering expert?

USB ports do not work, when printer etc attached, computer closes down

For the most part yes. Sounds like there is a short in the USB ports, causing the notebook to shut down. You can get around this by setting up a 'wireless print server' for your printer, which is about 120 bucks. if the laptop is already wireless compatable, which it should be. If Dell parts are running like they used to, they're probably quoting you about 700 for the part, and another 250+ for the labor. The print server will solve the printer issue, but other usb devices will not be usable on that machine without a new motherboard.

On the flip side, you can probably find a motherboard/cpu combo for that laptop on ebay for about 300 bucks cheaper then Dell wants for it, But unless you know how to change them out, you're still looking at about 200+ for labor depending on where you live. Don't accept a quote longer them 2.5 hours from a tech, it won't take longer then that if you don't have him reinstall your OS for ya.

Oh ya, new motherboard means windows won't boot properly, it's a piracy protection issue, and since SNs on the CPU will change, windows will have to reinstalled. most likely resulting in total loss of stored data with backup not being possibly unless you have another machine to network it to, since all external HDD and Flash Drives are USB.

Grage sale labtop.

Hi with the USB port they often wear and can be tightend by gently prizing up the flat contact strips inside the socket, this requires a fine needle and a steady hand. If this fails just install a PCIMA USB card. the fan could be faulty, if you can use a multimeter then test the contacts and see if you have power to it. Regards mistyman
