there is a sensor that tells the ECM to turn on the fan/s however the most common problem is the cooling fan motors go bad and need replacing. If you disconnect the electrical plug at the fan motor and run jumper wires to it from the battery the fans should run if not then the motor needs replacing.
you need to get pressurized air and blow the vents to remove dust particles causing over heat. Or if possible remove keyboard to expose cooling fan and chip and use pressurized air to blow off dust
I would guess that you are having a circulation problem but telling you why will require testing. It would be related to the hoses, the radiator, electric fan, or the water-pump. If the engine has been neglected then it could have to do with the antifreeze or maybe a clog inside the engine.
If it's only happening while sitting at a stop light and idling, the problem is probably in the cooling fans. Turn your A/C on high and pop the hood. Check your cooling fans to see if they're running. If they aren't running, it's the fan relay. In my 99 Taurus, the high speed fan relay is located in a slim black box next to the battery, it's the large square relay right up front. Use a known working relay of the same size and pop it into this relay. If the fans turn on, there's your problem. Replace the relay. Try the same with the A/C on low, but this relay is in the power distribution box (number 31). The 2002 may have a CCRM (Constant Control Relay Module). The CCRM is an expensive part (over $100.00). You'll be able to tell because the CCRM is a very large box that is mounted next to the battery and contains relays that are not replacable. It'll have a part number followed by a large letter/number. You'll need this part number and large letter/number to order the new.
You mite not want to reset this. This could be telling you that your fan is faulty/Dieing. If so then if it doesn't turn off your comp, your CPU will fry from the heat. Try replaceing your CPU fan within your computer. "Cool Master" is a good brand. you can find them at any Fry's Electronics Store.
Got it fixed. Thanks!
Your very welcome. =)
