Question about Microsoft Zune JS8-00001 Digital Media Player

1 Answer

I can't unlock my Zune.

When i try to turn it by turning from the play and pause button it won't turn on. It only turns on if I plug it in to the computer w/ the usb cable and when it does turn on I press down an it doesn't scroll down it just stays on the same spot
I have the same problem! And, of course, I've tried to turn the switch to unlock. I've actually had the problem once before and it fixed itself when I updated the software. But, that was several months ago. I installed the newest update software 2 days ago and the problem just started tonight. I haven't found any info on the microsoft support webpage about this problem.

    I FIXED MINE TODAY!!

Well, I was really frustrated after I did a reboot and a system restore (which cleared everything off my zune and reloaded the most updated software.) It still didn't fix the problem. I called a zune support person and they were impressed that I had done all the steps that they would have asked me to do. She was ready to take my credit card information and have it sent in for repair. I am out of warrant and it would have cost $129.95 regardless of what it took to repair it. That is a flat fee for anything that gets sent in to be repaired. Obviously I was ticked.

So . . . I looked at the switch again and noticed that it wasn't perfectly flat. The long side was tilted down toward the screen with the back tilted up. I tried (carefully) to pull it up with my fingernail and finally got it to pop back up to proper position. THIS FIXED IT!

I'm not sure what would have caused this switch to be tilted, but I think it has to do with my hard acrylic case. I always have it in the case for protection, but I had recently taken it out to clean a speck of dust that was driving me crazy because it was stuck on the screen. The case is a very tight fit. I think the lock button got bent when I was taking it out or putting it back in.

I hope this helps someone else and avoids them paying Microsoft $129.95!!! Ha, Ha, IN THEIR FACE!!

Whoa, thank you! I was surprised mine was tilted the exact same way and this fixed it!
    $129.95 fee avoided.
Thank you for posting this solution.

My zune is perminently in lock and can't do anything with it. Removed the button to try and fix and it dose not unlock. It has to be a program problem. Anyone got any ideas? This all started with the big freeze new years eve. now it just always locked.

YOU ARE AWESOME. I just had the same problem with my daughters Pink 30G Zune and you are right it was just a tilt of the lock button. Saved us all 129.99. YOU ROCK. Thank you kindly

Wish someone would give a little info about how to remove the cover to see if that is what the problem is with the switch..

My lock switch broke off. so with a paper clip I took off the little plastic under the switch. with that off, i could see the small black toggle switch and i was able to set that to the unlocked position. I cant lock my zune now but the zune works.

Zune dont turn on

Check to see if the 'Hold' switch on the top is set in the locked position, which could be preventing you from turning it on.
OR
Hold the right button (also known as the 'play/pause' button) for a few seconds and wait for the Zune start-up screen to come up.
OR

Hold the left button (the 'back' button) and the top of the Zune-pad for a few seconds until the screen resets.
OR
Try charging it. If the battery is drained, you will see a low battery indicator on the screen.

Zune will not turn on

1. If the Zune device is not connected to a power source, set the Hold switch to unlocked. Then, press and hold the Play/Pause button to turn off the device. • If this does not work, restart the device. To restart the device, set the Hold switch to the unlocked position, and then press and hold the Back button zune_button_back.gif as you press the top of the Zune Pad. When the device begins to reset, you can release the buttons. 2. If the Zune device is connected to a power source, it is operating correctly. You cannot manually turn off the Zune device. Note Depending on how you configured your backlight setting, the backlight for the Zune device may automatically turn off in this situation. To access the backlight options, select display on the settings menu, and then press the center of the Zune pad. To adjust the setting, select backlight, and then press the center of the Zune pad.

Bought a 8gb zune

OK, plug it in for about four hours, and then it should start to work. What has happened is it has frozen during standby mode. Hope this helps :-).

My 30gig zune is froze and unresponsive. Please help

there is a "lock" button on the top on the left side make sure this switch is turned to off.
Try one or more of these solutions to resolve this problem:
  • The Zune may be locked. Move the hold switch to the unlocked position. It may help to move the switch back and forth. Then press the play/pause button for a second.
  • The battery may be drained.try recharging it
  • To reset your Zune, press and hold the back button while pressing up on the Zune pad. Resetting turns Zune off and on again.

My computer will not recognize it.

I would start with attempting to reset the iPod to get it to connect to the computer. If that does not work, attempt to force it into disc mode. And if all else fails try another USB port on your computer or a friends computer. If it does not work try a different cable with your iPod to ensure that it is not just a cable connection :) Below is a step by step on resetting an iPod as well as disc mode just in case you need the information :)
Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.) Press and hold the Menu and Center (Select) buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 8 seconds. You may need to repeat this step. Tip: If you are having difficulty resetting your iPod, set it on a flat surface. Make sure the finger pressing the Select button is not touching any part of the click wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Menu button toward the outside of the click wheel, and not near the center.
If the above steps did not work, try connecting iPod to a power adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet, or connect iPod to your computer. Make sure the computer is turned on and isn't set to go to sleep.

If you are still unable to reset your iPod, use only one finger from one hand to press the Center (Select) button, and one finger from the other hand to press the Menu button.
When you reset iPod all your music and files are saved, but some customized settings may be lost. Date and time are preserved (unless the iPod reset itself because it had no power and then was reconnected to power). Other customized settings, such as Bookmarks, On-The-Go Playlists, Shuffle, Backlight timer, and so forth are preserved from the last time the hard drive turned on.

--------------------------------------------------

Putting ipod into disc mode http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1363 Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Set it to Hold, then turn it off again.) Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons for at least 6 seconds until the Apple logo appears. When the Apple logo appears, release the Menu and Select buttons and immediately press and hold the Select and the Play/Pause buttons until the Disk Mode screen appears.
Connect the iPod to your computer; the screen on the iPod will change and say "Do not disconnect" If you are having difficulty putting the iPod model into disk mode, set it on a flat surface. Make sure that the finger pressing the Select button is not touching the Click Wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Play/Pause button toward the outside of the Click Wheel and not near the center.
If you are still unable to put your iPod with a Click Wheel into Disk Mode, use one finger from one hand to press the Select button, and one finger from the other hand to press the Play/Pause button.

If you have an mp3 player like the one shown in the picture, then just flick the hold switch on, then flick it again to off. This should work. It worked for me.
