Reformatting a drive is a big undertaking, formating the drive will erase everything, including viruses, before you format you need to make sure you have all the discs including the windows disc, driver discs, and a factory restore disc, also you make check the documentation on your system because alot of the gaetway, dell, emachines systems have restore partitions installed on the drive. Also youll need alot of coffee and alot of time, most importantly aside from the windows disc youll need a driver disc for any ethernet or wireless card you have installed. without this you will not have access to the internet most likely and donloading updated drivers is very helpful. This is a time consuming proccess unless there is a restore partition on the harddrive, the documentation will tell you how toaccess it if it exists, if not a restore disc will be nice.

Can I upgrade e 4100 processor?

Based on the motherboard specifications, and looking at the specs that the Gateway lists for the unit, A Pentium 4 processor socket 478 at 2.8 GHz is the maximum for that machine. Gateway specs show exactly that is what is installed on the E4100. Unfortunately, most pre-built machines have little or no CPU upgradeability since they are built to specs.

XP got reinstalled on my computer and I dont have the audio driver so my computer doesnt play music and doesnt recognise the computer

You need the audio Drivers.
Go here: http://support.gateway.com/us/en/product/default.aspx?tab=1&modelId=2647
This is the support site for the Gateway Computers. There wasn't a listing for the E-4000 so i used the E-4100, it should work just fine.
Download the most recent Audio Driver and install it. Restart your computer and that should fix it.
Hope it was helpful.

according to the sites info on the network ethernet adapter, it should indicate to you the chipsets product name. take that information and go directly to the chipset manufacturer and look for an xp supported driver at their website.

I got a nasty virus that disabled my ability to start up my windows xp. no matter what I do it takes me back to the screen where you can choose to run it in safe mode.Every choice that I have tried it...

have you tried the guide to trouble shoot the problem http://www.helpowl.com/manuals/Gateway/GT4010/83386

as you said that you are not able to start the computer it can only be solved by using a BOOT CD of a data recovery software, as this CD will help you boot your system and recover the lost data, It will also help you to recover the product key of the older version of the XP version installed

Have a gateway 506 gr windows xp.. picked up a

If you didn't create recovery disks when you got the computer, you will need to contact Gateway for them.
I would question the supposition that you have a virus. If you do, you can usually at least get into safe mode. I would suspect a hardware problem in your case.

I need the bios and flash program for a gateway 4535gz I suspect it has a bios virus because a fresh install of windows XP pro and symantec anti virus and drivers (all freshly downloaded) becomes corrupted...

There is no such thing as a BIOS virus. However, there are such things are boot sector viruses. Before you reinstall XP again, wipe the hard drive completely by deleting and recreating the primary partition.

Gateway computer, cannot get printer to work.

Go into "printers and faxs",delete your printer and then reinstall it . It should be "plug and play"if not you will have to use your disc or let "windows" search for a driver.
