I could not locate the storagedevicepolicies under currentcontrolset or controlset001 or 002 or 003. There is a USBFlag heading, but no writecontrol string. Any advice?

OK – after an hour or so of faffing around :knock: , I think that I have found a possible solution write protection - tongue.gif . The problem seems to be something to do with Microsoft’s SP2 dead.gif !
Here’s what worked for me (sorry for the Idiot’s Guide approach, but I used to :hotbounce hate it :hotbounce when I used forums and couldn’t understand what the technobabble meant!):

- Start > Run > type ‘regedit’ (without the speachmarks) > Enter
- Single-click on ‘My Computer’ > File > Export > save it to the Desktop (Always best to have a backup!!)
- Go to the following:
My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorageDeviceP olicies
*There seems to be some spaces here in 'StorageDevicePolicies' in the text above, there shouldn't be, OK*
- Double click on the string ‘WriteProtect’ and change the ‘Value Data’ box to ‘0’
- Then: File > Export > save somewhere useful as something like ‘StorageDevicePolicies001.reg’
- You also need to do this for the strings in any folders called ‘ControlSet***’ (* = any Digit, i.e. 001, 002) – for example: Everything is the same, just change ‘CurrentControlSet’ to ‘ControlSet***’
My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\StorageDevicePolic ies
*There seems to be some spaces here in 'StorageDevicePolicies' in the text above, there shouldn't be, OK*
- Save these to the same place as before as ‘StorageDevicePolicies00*’

The saves are in case it reverts at a later date, just double click (saying ‘yes’ to importing these to the registry) on all of the files and it will all work again!

How do I remove the write protect from my 1gb thumb drive in windows 7

There are three solutions for this, depending on your situation.

#1 - Check if your flash drive has a "Hold" or "Lock" switch. Some flash drives have very small switches on them. If they are in the wrong position, the computer will give you a 'write protection' error.

#2 - The drive may have read-only properties. To undo this, go to My Computer, right-click on the thumb drive, and select properties. Untick the "Read-Only" box.

#3 - If all else fails, you an perform a format within Windows. Go to the Control Panel, and select Administrative Tools, then Computer Management. Select your flash drive from the list and select the reformat option.

I am trying to copy a PDF onto my flashdrive and get this message...remove write protection from the volume in drive E

You have made your flash drive read only. There might be a slider in the flash drive which makes it read-write and read only. Slide it and now transfer the files

Question: can I save word docs to my mp3 player as if it were a flash drive. It has a folder labeled TXT. what is this for

You can use any MP3 player to store information other then a music file on them. Just keep in mind that you may not be able to read them from the player. For example my player will read txt files, but not doc files, so if I wanted to read them from my player, I would need to save in ascii format, as a .txt file. You should be able to export to txt from Word. If you just want to use it like a thumb drive, then any format is acceptable.

Make sure your mp3 "HOLD" option is not on!
Its really as simple as that. The hold button 'protects' the files.
