Dell Optiplex GX270 Driver Questions

Recently installed Windows XP Pro on my aunt's Dell Optiplex GX270.

Everytime I try to play a CD or DVD, it says there's no sound card installed. Is a sound card the same as an audio driver? Or is it hardware?

I went on the Dell website and found an audio driver for it, & downloaded it on a disc to install on her computer.

If it's only the driver software that I need, do I need to download a separate driver for watching DVD viewing also? Or will the audio driver be good enough?

If I will need a separate DVD viewing driver, which do I choose? There's s ''Video'' section that has 5 files & ''CD/DVD'' section which has 39. I'm not sure which one I'd need.

Here's the link:
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&ServiceTag=&SystemID=PLX_PNT_CEL_GX270&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

thank u for your reply. yes, there's an audio jack (1 of 3) in the back of the computer that i already connected the speakers to, only to still get that message.

so i guess i need to either install or reinstall the audio driver then? because when i looked at the "sound, video and game controllers" list in device manager, i don't think i saw anything resembling the audio driver that they had listed on the dell driver list on that link. there were only audio codecs.

i think that computer definitely has a DVD drive, and has either Windows Media Player version 9 or 10. if i just have Windows Media Player alone, do i still need extra DVD viewing software? can u recommend any good and free software to download?

is there also a way to download Windows Media Player version 11 to a disc & then load it to my aunt's computer? because she doens't have an internet connection

On the Audio driver question: the answer is yes the Audio driver is what allows you to have sound.

On the DVD software, I did not see any software on Dell link. Download Windows Media, newest version is ver.11
It will allow you to watch DVDs

You can also check this site:

Copy and paste the complete link into your browser.
If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe

When you go to the Dell site for your audio drive, click on the driver, then click run (instead of save). It will install the driver for you.

Here is the link for Media Player 11, and yes you can save it to a disk.:

The audio driver is the software for the sound card (hardware). Are you sure you have a sound card installed? - is there an audio jack to connect the speakers to? The DVD viewing requires DVD viewing software and a DVD drive. The latest Windows Media Player supports DVD. Also check Device Manager in Control Panel for any other hardware driver problems.
