I have a brand new JVC DR-MV-78B DVD Video Recorder (Region 1). It will play everything except Region 1 store-purchased DVDs. IT will play VHS, dubbed DVDs, audio discs, etc. When I insert a purchased DVD, I get "NO DISC." I have cleaned the lens, unplugged/plugged the player, and everything else suggested. The player is two days old. It worked perfectly the first day, playing anything I tried. The next morning and ever since, I had this problem. The player is connected correctly to a 50" Hitachi HD Plasma TV.

1. Check that disc is loaded the correct way.
2. Check that disc is encoded for your geographical region. A disc from Europe (Region 2) will not play in a North American (Region 1) player.
3. Turn off player with disc inserted, unplug temporarily from wall outlet, plug back in and turn back on.
4. If your player has a transportation lock (usually a plastic screw on the bottom of the unit), make sure that it is not engaged.
5. If you have an older player, check with the manufacturer to see whether an update to the firmware is available. Many newer DVD titles with lots of special features are famous for causing problems on older players.

Which DVD disk are we talking about?
Is it a prerecorded purchased DVD movie or one you have done or your PC?
(See my response to similar postings)
Does the disk play on another machine?
Is the disk surface Scratched or Dirty?
Have you run a laser lens cleaner disk through your player?(Available from most electronics and el-cheapo shops)
Assuming all that does not apply it could be caused by many things. See responses to other postings! Hope this helps - hattonhall

I had this problem on my Sony DVP-NS41P after about 1 year. After loading and after a long wait it would report something like " cannot read disc". After taking top off of player I noticed disc was not spinning and after some debugging I believe the spindle motor has failed. So I think this is one possible failure that might explain your problem. Unfortunately my player was a few months over 1 year old so the warranty had expired (my wife hadn't keep the receipt anyway, but in this case it wouldn't have helped). Sony was running a return and replacement with a refurbished unit program on this model number (for ~$75) so I am considering this but mostly I plan on not buying another sony.

I have model DP 3182. It too started having the problem of "No Disc" when the same disk plays just fine in my other DVD Recorder. When I finally opened it I noticed that the ribbon cable which goes from the board to the read head, was cracked near the connector at the read head.
In my opinion this is a design flaw as this cable should have had a lot of play to prevent just this problem. I am now in the market for this cable. I wonder if any one knows where I can purchase this part (22 conductors - 7.5" long and 0.5 " wide part number seems to be - P-TWO AWM 20696 E221612 80c 30v vw-1 - I am not sure which out of this is the part number and which are just specs).
Unfortunately other than replacing this cable, there is no other solution. All the symptoms like motor not spinning up etc are related to this as this cable sends the DVD/MP3/DiVX data back to the board.

I got the Amphion Mediaworks m280 Portable CD as a gift. After 6 months, it stops reading any CD/DVD I put in the player. It seems I have the same issues as the 17 users in this site. What can you do to help?

take the outside cover off .and then remove the 4 screws from the inside drive cover.then slide the drive back some to clear front cover.then lift the drive out. then find the little white gear ont he bottom side and turn the gear so the disk tray slides out as far as it can go .check both ribbon cables on both ends. then with the disk tray still out plug in the unit to the ac outlet and hit the power button on the front. the drive should return closed after it boots you should the drive spin .then turn it off with power button on the front. then unplug unit from wall.then put drive back in unit.then place the inside cover over the drive and check to make sure not to pinch any wiers the hard drive power wiers is aginst the case.then tighten down 4 screws.then check if every thing works wright.if every thing works put cover back on . I did this to fix the drive the screen just said open and locked up before the fix

Repeatedly displays NO DISC for CDs or DVDs. Suspicious that it may be an alignment problem, which was told me about 3 years ago ... after I had it about 3 years, about $135 as I recall.

Did not load in the dvd/vcr combo player. Tried my computer dvd reader said that I did not have a decoder installed to read the dvd. Used a newer laptop and windows media player to watch dvd. So the dvd is good no scratches brand new but the Sylvania dvd/vcr player can not read the special feature interactive software on the disc. Is there a updated decoding software for this player. Has happened with 2 new released movies. Others work fine. Must me the software on the dvd unrecognized.

After 6 months the player will not play ANY DVD's bought or burned. The message is Incorrect Disc. Took unit apart and reseated power and data cables and still no dice. Cannot locate a replacement DVD drive either.

I have a Philips model no. DVDR3455H/97 .For sometime I am having this problem. When I load a properDVD+RW disc and press DVD on the remote, the response is "not supported disc type". Other pre-recorded discs get the same response with the result that I can neither play discs nor record on them. HDD is ok.

Samsung DVD-VR335 get the disk error screen, and then all of them eject. I've tried store bought movies, DVD-RW, DVD+-RW and so on and so forth. Was told by Samsung customer service to clean the system. Did that, guess what, still doesn't work. Of course, after warranty, and purchased from Dell, so no one was willing to help. Pretty costly problem.
Anyone know if there is some kind of update, or support?
Thanks in advance.

My player will not recognize certain discs. I've experienced this problem with my WWE Wrestlemania 23 DVD set and just recently, my WWE Raw 15th Anniversary DVD set. I know the discs aren't dirty because I just bought the 15th Anniversary Set today. The first disc in the set played perfectly. But when I put in the second disc, a little red 'circle with a slash through it' symbol appeared in the top right corner of my tv. I've also had the same problem with my Wrestlemania 23 DVD set. The second disc will play perfectly, but the first and third discs won't play at all.

DVB216 tray opens, accepts a DVD and closes fine. Motor is then heard spinning and a spinning disc is shown on the display. After several seconds, the display shows "Disc Error".  Help, where do I start??

Comment by Dog leg, posted on Dec 18, 2007

After putting in a disk the display reads loading and the disk spins, the laser comes on and focuses but the laser doesn't track. after about a minute the display reads "no disk".

Comment by BarrySR, posted on Dec 05, 2007

My DVD's have been the DV-F07 and played successfully for a long time ... so I know nothing is wrong with the DVD's. When I tell the system to "PLAY" a DVD it begins ... rotates ... the DVD number appears in the display and sometimes "000" appears ... and then the system starts all over and may try to load the same DVD again (with same results) or go to the next DVD and try to load that DVD (with same results).

It almost seems the unit has "lost its tranport mind".

Any thoughts or solutions greatly appreciated.

Oh, I've tried turning it OFF for a long time ... even unpluged it for a long time ... neither helped.

Thanks, barry cooper, sr.

The Problem is When burning movies you need to know what format the dvd player plays movies in. So does anyone know what format the Hitachi DV-P533U dvd player plays in is it SVCD, VCD or even divx

Comment by Oalph, posted on Nov 15, 2007

During loading a window appears with the message the disk may not play back and stops the load. Was using DVD-R 4x.
Used a faster disk but it would not work. Funai parts sent a upgrade?? disk. Now even a -RW 4x won't load. I don't have any -R 4x to test.
