I am trying to print in black/white, but am unable to do so because the printer insists that the cyan and yellow toners need to be replaced. I need to print in b/w for now and plan to replace the color toners soon, but is there a way to bypass that error for now? Please help.

Usualy white lines are a signal for you that is time to replace a toner cartirdge. Your machine may inform you that you need to replace a toner cartridge, but sometimes the toner levels are low and the machine doesn't indicate that. Another thing that you may try is to clean all toner cartridges using each corona wire. If you need to replace your toner cartridge check this easy and helpful way to replace toner cartridge.
Unfortunately, no, the printer won't print even in color if the black toner is empty. The black drum rotates whether the copier is printing in black & white or color, so if black is empty you can't print at all.
This is going to depend greatly on what type of printing you are doing as well as if you use OEM HP toner cartridges or go with a cheaper aftermarket cartridge. At the low end, this machine will cost you 2.5 cents per page for Black & White and 15 cents per page for Color. On the high end it will be closer to 5 cents for Black and 20+ cents for Color. The percentage of toner coverage will also obviously effect you per page printing cost as a page with more coverage is using more toner than one with less coverage. Keep in mind that the stated yield that each cartridge will produce is based on an industry standard of about 5% covergae which is not much when compared to the typical printing of most users.
Good Luck and Thank You for using Fixya.
You can change the colour setting in the printer driver to Black Only, this means you will only print Black and White using only the black toner.
To make this change on Windows XP;
Open the Printers and Faxes Folder.
Right Click on the printer driver for the 8008.
Select Printing Preferences.
Click on the Color/Print Quality Tab.
In the Color Mode section select the B&W radio button.
Click on the APPLY button
This should change the pritner driver to print only black and white.
You have to disassemble the printer and clean the prisms inside the black box within the printer. The prism for the red and yellow colors are near the bottom and face up, so they easily collect dust buildup, thereby causing weak or striped printing of these colors.
